A Maintenance Helper or Assistant assists maintenance mechanics. Repairs and maintains equipment and machines, such as cars or heating systems. May assemble or adjust machines as directed by a head mechanic.

DEFINITION
This position performs skilled work in the maintenance of park grounds and facilities.
REPORTS TO
The Crew Leader assigns work in terms of general instructions.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Mows grass, edges curbs, and removes leaves; removes tree limbs and dead trees from parks. Operates mowers, blowers, edgers, and weed eaters. Picks up supplies needed to perform daily work activities. Installs and maintains flower beds. Maintains tools and equipment. Assists with litter collection and disposal. Assists in the installation of irrigation systems. Applies herbicides and pesticides. Installs, repairs, and maintains fences. Maintains restrooms. Applies fertilizers. Maintains and repairs sports fields. Installs mulch. Plants trees and shrubs. Assists in equipment set-up and break-down for special events. Preparation of athletic Fields and bathrooms for games. Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Must have a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina. No experience Needed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of assigned tools and equipment. Knowledge of safety standards. Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions. Skill in the repair and maintenance of hand tools.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Crew Leader assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include the Personnel Policy Manual; OSHA regulations; work zone safety standards; and equipment operation and repair manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY
The work consists of related maintenance duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT
The purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance of City parks. Success in this position contributes to a well-maintained City park grounds and facilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally,and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
Balancing :
Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
Climbing :
Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
Crawling :
Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
Crouching :
Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
Feeling :
Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
Grasping :
Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
Handling :
Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand Hearing 1 : Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination sound. Kneeling :
Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
Lifting :
Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
Mental Acuity :
Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
