Job Description

General Description Performs intermediate manual work performing a variety of park grounds and building maintenance and repair assignments, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Grounds Crew Supervisor. Essential Functions Cleans buildings and offices; dusts furniture, vacuums carpets, and empties garbage cans; sweeps and mops floors; strips and waxes floors; cleans restrooms; picks up litter and debris Mows and maintains athletic fields, cemeteries, golf course greens, fairways, roughs, and playgrounds; sows grass. Trims hedges and weeds around fences, water hazards, play equipment, and other areas not accessible by mower Prepares athletic fields for play; marks lines on playing fields; reshapes mounds; resets bases; performs general field maintenance duties; rakes sand traps, fertilizes greens and fairways, pulls out golf carts, and fills water coolers. Paints walls, foul poles, and other objects as instructed. Performs minor electrical and plumbing work on buildings and picnic shelters. Helps set up facilities for meetings and special events. Operates a variety of equipment including aerator, reel gang mower, fertilizer spreader, and pull behind rotary mower, and hand tools in the performance of tasks. Performs light maintenance of tractors and equipment; checks and changes oil, water, and fluid levels; changes filters. Checks and inspects facilities, grounds, and equipment for necessary repairs and replacements; reports unusual observations to supervisor. Typical Qualifications Minimal experience in general building and grounds maintenance, and/or the ability to be trained. Obtain CPR certification within one year of hire. Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina. General knowledge of tools, materials, and equipment used in general construction, turf grass, horticulture, and maintenance work; general knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently; some knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to read and write; ability to read maps and take measurements; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to operate tools and equipment safely; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, contractors, vendors, and the general public. Physical Demands To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and frequent exertion of up to 20 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires speaking or hearing, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
