MAINTENANCE WORKER I

DEFINITION

To perform semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance and related service activities related to the Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection systems. This is the entry level class in the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties of the Department, and by working under continual supervision.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives immediate supervision from Water Utilities Maintenance Supervisor, Water Utilities Maintenance Superintendent, or higher-level staff Non-Essential Job Requirements Be trustworthy and adhere to ethical & regulatory standards. Be generally curious about the work, positive, helpful, collaborative, team oriented, and interact respectfully with peers and public Be productive, take initiative, meet deadlines, and keep an eye for detail Be safe and proactively manage risks to minimize incidents. Communicate clearly and concisely (orally and written) Job Functions Maintain, repair or replace water and sewer lines; vac and flush sewer lines; install new water and sewer lines as required Maintain, repair and replace water meters; shut off water service; lock meters as appropriate. Maintain records and logs of all work performed. Be available to work on-call hours as part of a rotating schedule. Any specific requirements described in the

Offer of Employment Letter Qualifications/Knowledge of:

Manual tools used for digging and filling trenches, and for cutting, repairing, and replacing water and sewer lines and fittings. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Methods and techniques of general construction, maintenance and repair related to the area of work assigned. Operating a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner. Performing a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions, perform heavy manual labor. Understanding and following oral and written instructions. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Maintaining physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities such as walking, standing, bending, kneeling or crouching for extended periods of time.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

Experience :

This is an entry level position. Experience with manual labor, light or heavy equipment use, or general construction is desirable.

Training :

Formal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

License or Certification :

Must possess high school diploma or GED. Employees are required to obtain a Class A CDL within six (6) months of their hire date. If scheduling conflicts or CDL training course availability prevent an employee from completing training within this timeframe, the matter will be addressed at the supervisor's discretion in coordination with Human Resources.
