MAINTENANCE TEAM MEMBER JOB DESCRIPTION
The Maintenance Worker performs skilled and general maintenance, repair, and preventive maintenance throughout District buildings, grounds, and facilities. This position supports the District's commitment to providing safe, functional, clean, and well-maintained environments for students, staff, families, and visitors. The Maintenance Worker works collaboratively with the Operations Supervisor, building administrators, custodial staff, and other District personnel and is expected to demonstrate professionalism, dependability, effective communication, and a team-oriented approach.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or Equivalent required. Previous experience in building, grounds, facilities, construction, maintenance, or a related field preferred. Working knowledge and/or experience in multiple areas of building and grounds maintenance, which may include: Electrical Plumbing HVAC Carpentry and general construction Masonry Fabrication Painting and finishing General building repair Small engine and equipment repair Grounds and athletic field maintenance Snow and ice removal Ability to safely operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, vehicles, machinery, and other maintenance equipment. Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions, equipment manuals, safety procedures, and work orders. Ability to identify maintenance concerns, troubleshoot problems, and determine when additional technical or professional assistance is required. Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as a member of the Operations team. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with staff, students, families, contractors, vendors, and community members. Ability to respond appropriately to urgent maintenance needs and emergencies. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and meet District requirements for operating District vehicles. Must be able to perform the physical requirements associated with the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform general maintenance, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs throughout District buildings and facilities. Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair plumbing, electrical, HVAC, locks, doors, fixtures, equipment, and other building systems within the scope of the position. Complete assigned work orders accurately, efficiently, and within established timelines. Communicate the status of work orders, repairs, projects, and identified concerns to the Operations Supervisor. Promptly report building, equipment, safety, security, or infrastructure concerns requiring additional attention or specialized service. Conduct routine inspections of buildings and facilities to identify maintenance needs and potential safety concerns. Inspect rooftops, drains, and other designated building areas for debris, damage, drainage concerns, or other maintenance needs as assigned. Perform painting, patching, carpentry, masonry, fabrication, and other general building repairs as needed. Assist with maintaining, preparing, and repairing athletic fields, playground areas, grounds, and other outdoor facilities. Maintain District grounds, including debris removal, trimming shrubs and vegetation, maintaining entrances and courtyards, and performing seasonal grounds work. Perform snow and ice removal, including safely operating snowplows and other snow-removal equipment which may occur outside of regularly scheduled work and business hours. Assist with setting up and breaking down facilities for classrooms, meetings, conferences, athletic activities, District programs, and special events. Move furniture, equipment, materials, supplies, and tools as necessary to support District operations. Receive, transport, and distribute freight, equipment, school materials, supplies, and other District property. Assist with inventory control, organization, storage, and security of District equipment, tools, supplies, and materials. Safely operate District vehicles, machinery, power equipment, hand tools, and other job-related equipment and maintenance of vehicles. Properly maintain assigned tools and equipment and report equipment that requires repair or replacement. Follow manufacturer instructions and District procedures regarding the safe use, storage, and handling of chemicals, supplies, tools, and equipment. Perform floor maintenance and other facility-related tasks as needed to support District operations, including stripping, finishing, buffing, carpet extraction, and operating appropriate floor-care equipment. Respond to maintenance emergencies and urgent facility needs as directed which may occur outside of regular scheduled work and business hours. Support building security by identifying and reporting concerns involving doors, locks, windows, lighting, access points, or other facility conditions. Maintain work areas, maintenance spaces, vehicles, tools, and equipment in a safe, orderly, and professional condition. Follow all applicable District policies, procedures, safety requirements, and local, State, and Federal regulations, including applicable MIOSHA requirements. Attend required safety meetings, training sessions, departmental meetings, and other professional learning activities. Work collaboratively with custodial and maintenance personnel, building administrators, and other District staff to address facility needs and priorities. Follow directives and work assignments established by the Operations Supervisor and other authorized District administrators. Maintain professional, respectful, and cooperative working relationships and contribute positively to the effectiveness and morale of the Operations team. Maintain regular and reliable attendance and communicate absences in accordance with District and departmental procedures. Perform other duties as assigned by the Operations Supervisor or District administration.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The position requires the ability to perform a variety of physical tasks associated with building and grounds maintenance, including standing, walking, bending, reaching, climbing, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and working from ladders or at varying heights. The employee may be required to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and around equipment, machinery, dust, noise, and maintenance materials. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle; or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stop or kneel, reach above the head, and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs onto ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, such as cleaning supplies, pails, and unloading trucks. Occasionally, the employee will seek assistance when lifting and/or moving anything over 50 pounds, such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, and scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to safely perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
