Full Job Description Second Presbyterian Church Position Title:
Assistant Sexton Position Summary The Assistant Sexton is responsible for the care, maintenance, and oversight of church buildings, grounds, and the cinerarium. This role ensures that facilities and surrounding areas are kept clean, safe, and presentable for worship services, funerals, and other church activities. The Assistant Sexton also assists with preparation for worship services and special events, minor repairs, and coordination with vendors or volunteers. The Assistant Sexton will assist with the Monday Walk-In Ministry and the Tuesday Shower Ministry. These ministries require the Assistant Sexton to use a commercial dishwashing machine, to launder towels, rags, and clothing, and to clean showers between users. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Clean and maintain the church buildings including entrances, hallways, stairs, sanctuary, chapel, restrooms, kitchen, dining room, choir room, classrooms, courtyards, and other areas as needed. Perform routine upkeep including sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, trash removal, and restroom cleaning. Handle seasonal tasks such as leaf raking and sidewalk care. Ensure proper lighting, heating, and ventilation of the building. Report deficiencies and maintenance issues to the Building Administrator when necessary. Prepare worship spaces for services, weddings, funerals, baptisms, and community events. Arrange seating, set up equipment, and ensure supplies (candles, bulletins, communion items, etc.) are available. Open and secure the building before and after services. Maintain cinerarium, including trash/litter collection and general upkeep. Assist with burial preparations, plot marking, and record keeping. Identify and report maintenance issues to Building Administrator. Ensure safety standards are upheld. Collaborate with clergy, staff, and volunteers to support church activities. Maintain inventory of supplies and order replacements as needed. Serve as a welcoming presence to members, visitors, and community guests. Qualifications Experience in commercial cleaning methods, commercial equipment operation, and general grounds maintenance preferred. Ability to work independently and manage time effectively. Physical ability to perform manual labor, lift heavy objects, and work outdoors in all seasons. Respectful, discreet, and supportive of the mission and values of the church/community. Working Conditions Combination of indoor and outdoor work. Requires weekend and evening availability for services and events. May involve exposure to weather, cleaning products, and moderate physical exertion. Relationships High interaction with staff, volunteers, church members, ministry guests, contractors, and members of the public.
Pay:
$16.00 - $17.50 per hour Expected hours: 30.0 per week
