Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation or designee, the Skilled Maintenance - Lead Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Specialist performs advanced journeyman-level HVAC work and serves as the lead over HVAC staff; coordinates, prioritizes, assigns, and reviews work orders; provides technical expertise, guidance, and quality assurance; and ensures HVAC, refrigeration, and control systems are maintained, repaired, and operating safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and District expectations. In support of efficient operations and timely completion of District priorities, incumbents may be assigned to assist other skilled maintenance trades or functional areas on projects or work assignments outside of their primary specialty. Such assignments are performed consistent with the employee's skills, training, certifications, and safety requirements, and may include collaborative, cross-trade project work as needed to meet operational demands while supporting a team-based, service-oriented maintenance model focused on efficiency, timely service delivery, operational consistency, and continuous improvement in support of safe and functional learning environments.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Supervision is received from the Executive Director of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation or designee. This classification provides functional lead direction, technical guidance, and work coordination to assigned staff but does not exercise formal supervisory authority.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Skilled Maintenance - Lead HVAC Specialist is the advanced journey-level classification that performs the most complex and specialized HVAC work while providing functional leadership over HVAC operations. Incumbents are responsible for assigning, prioritizing, and reviewing work orders; coordinating workflow; and providing technical guidance to HVAC staff to ensure quality, consistency, and timely completion of work. Incumbents are also responsible for coordinating cross-trade collaboration and supporting department-wide operations, including assigning or participating in multi-trade projects and ensuring staff resources are utilized effectively to meet operational priorities. This role promotes a team-based approach to maintenance services and ensures that work is completed efficiently regardless of trade boundaries, consistent with employee qualifications and safety requirements. This classification is distinguished from the Skilled Maintenance - HVAC Specialist by its responsibility for ongoing coordination, assignment, prioritization, and review of work across staff and projects, as well as accountability for workflow, quality, and operational efficiency across projects and assignments, but does not exercise formal supervisory authority such as hiring, discipline, or evaluation.

Provides high-quality customer service to site administrators, staff, students, and community members by responding to maintenance service requests with urgency, professionalism, and a solution-oriented approach; communicates clearly regarding system status, repair timelines, and operational impacts; ensures services support safe, functional, clean, and well-maintained learning and working environments; and collaborates with other trades and departments to ensure timely and effective resolution of maintenance needs. E Performs advanced skilled installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of HVAC systems including air conditioning units, boilers, furnaces, chillers, refrigeration systems, ventilation systems, and related controls and components. E Performs preventive maintenance including filter replacement, cleaning, lubrication, adjustment of belts and assemblies, and inspection of system components on scheduled intervals. E Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, and control system malfunctions using diagnostic tools, schematics, and manufacturer specifications; performs necessary repairs and replacements. E Maintains and repairs control systems, thermostats, sensors, and building automation systems to ensure proper system operation and efficiency. E Maintains, repairs, and services hot water, steam, and chilled water systems including pumps, heat exchangers, and storage tanks. E Clears obstructions and performs necessary repairs to associated ventilation and air distribution systems. E Reads and interprets blueprints, plans, and technical specifications to plan and complete work assignments. E Operates and maintains tools, equipment, and District vehicles in a safe and efficient manner. E Maintains inventory of supplies, equipment, and materials and submits requests to ensure availability of required resources. E Utilizes work order systems and technology platforms to receive, track, update, and close work assignments; maintains accurate records of work performed, materials used, and system conditions. E Coordinates with other trades and departments to complete projects and resolve facility issues. E Assists other trades and participates in cross-functional maintenance and construction projects as assigned to support timely completion of District work. E Communicates with school sites, departments, and management regarding work status, project timelines, operational impacts, and resource needs. E Assigns, prioritizes, and reviews HVAC work orders and projects; monitors workflow and ensures timely and accurate completion of assigned tasks. E Coordinates workflow and monitors progress of assigned work. E Coordinates and deploys staff resources across trades and projects to meet operational priorities and timelines. E Provides functional direction, technical guidance, training, and support to HVAC staff. E Inspects completed work to ensure quality, completeness, and compliance with applicable codes, standards, and District expectations. E Assists in coordinating HVAC projects including planning, estimating labor and material needs, sequencing work, and collaborating with other trades, departments, and external partners as needed. E Maintains and supports building automation and energy management systems; monitors system performance and recommends improvements. E Responds to complex or emergency HVAC issues, including after-hours and weekend call-outs as assigned. E Ensures compliance with applicable building codes, safety regulations, environmental standards, and refrigerant handling requirements. E Monitors system performance and maintains logs including system data, maintenance records, and operational readings. E Participates in the development and implementation of department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures. E Assists with projects, assignments, and operational needs outside of primary trade specialization, as needed to support department priorities, deadlines, and emergency response activities. E Performs other related duties as assigned that are appropriate within the professional capacity of the Skilled Maintenance - Lead HVAC Specialist classification.

QUALIFICATIONS
Any other combination of experience, training, and/or education that could likely provide the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Education High school diploma or equivalent is required. Experience Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience performing HVAC installation, maintenance, and repair, including advanced troubleshooting and demonstrated lead or coordination experience.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES A
valid California driver's license is required. Possession of a valid EPA Section 608 Type II or Universal Certification, or the ability to obtain within a specified period, is required. A valid C-20 Warm-Air Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning Contractor license is highly desirable. Additional specialized certifications related to HVAC systems, such as NATE certification or equivalent credentials, are highly desirable and may be required within a specified period of employment. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical Activities :
Requires frequent standing, walking, and working in indoor and outdoor environments; frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and squatting; occasional crawling and working in confined or restricted spaces; and frequent reaching at, below, and above shoulder level while performing repairs, installations, and oversight of work activities. Requires climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and working at heights, including rooftops and elevated platforms. Work involves balancing on ladders and uneven surfaces, frequent twisting at the waist, and sustained use of upper extremities for handling tools, materials, and inspecting work. Fine manipulation, simple grasping, and power grasping are performed frequently when operating tools and evaluating completed work. Driving and operation of District vehicles and equipment is performed as required.
Lifting and Carrying Requirements :
Frequently lifts and carries tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to 10 pounds; regularly lifts and carries objects up to 25 pounds; and occasionally lifts and carries objects up to 50 pounds. Heavier items may be lifted or moved with assistance.
Sensory Requirements :
Requires visual acuity to inspect systems, review completed work for quality and safety, read plans and specifications, and identify hazards. Requires hearing and speaking to communicate with staff, coordinate work activities, and respond to environmental conditions.
