Job Description

Deputy Director of Highway Maintenance Deputy Director of Highway Maintenance Deputy Director of Highway Maintenance The Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA), Maine's Gold Star Memorial Highway, is seeking a Deputy Director of Highway Maintenance. The Deputy Director of Highway Maintenance supports the Director of Highway & Equipment Maintenance in preserving the integrity of and enhancing the Maine Turnpike Authority's roadway infrastructure. This position provides senior-level leadership and operational oversight for the management, preservation, and improvement of MTA's 650 lane miles of roadway, rights-of-way, and 182 bridges. The Deputy Director serves as a strategic partner to the Director, driving operational excellence, workforce development, safety compliance, regulatory adherence, and long-range infrastructure planning to ensure the safe, efficient, and uninterrupted movement of MTA's traveling customers. The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Public Administration, or a related field, or equivalent work experience. A minimum of 7 years in public works, construction, or maintenance is required, including at least 5 years in a supervisory role. Experience with snow and ice control on public roadways is preferred. A valid State of Maine Class C driver's license is required. Candidates should be proficient in MS Office, with familiarity in timekeeping software, Blue Beam, and MS Access being advantageous. The role demands extensive knowledge of public works operations, including winter maintenance practices, highway and bridge design, and state regulations. The Deputy Director should be skilled in managing complex projects, analyzing financial and traffic data, and leading teams. Strong communication skills, including customer service and public relations, are essential to effectively work with employees, vendors, and the public.
