Position Summary The Fiber Splicing Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily fiber optic splicing operations and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company, customer, and industry standards. This position provides field leadership to fiber splicing technicians, coordinates schedules and resources, monitors quality and productivity, and supports the successful completion of fiber construction, maintenance, restoration, and testing activities. The Fiber Splicing Supervisor serves as a key point of communication between field crews, project management, construction teams, customers, and other stakeholders. Key Responsibilities Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of fiber optic splicing crews. Assign work, establish priorities, and ensure crews have the equipment, materials, documentation, and information required to complete assigned work. Oversee fiber splicing, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and restoration activities. Ensure fiber splicing is completed according to approved splice plans, engineering drawings, customer specifications, and applicable standards. Review splice diagrams, fiber assignments, OTDR results, power meter readings, and other testing documentation. Monitor workmanship and perform quality-control inspections to ensure completed work meets required specifications. Identify and resolve fiber-related issues, including high-loss events, damaged fibers, incorrect assignments, continuity problems, and other network faults. Coordinate with construction supervisors, project managers, engineers, inspectors, and customers regarding project status and field conditions. Track daily production, completed footage, splice counts, testing results, deficiencies, and outstanding work. Ensure accurate and timely completion of production reports, splice documentation, test results, redlines, and closeout packages. Enforce company safety policies and applicable OSHA requirements and conduct regular jobsite safety observations. Conduct or participate in daily job briefings, tailboard meetings, and job hazard analyses. Ensure proper use, inspection, maintenance, and accountability of fusion splicers, OTDRs, power meters, hand tools, vehicles, and other company equipment. Train, coach, and mentor fiber splicing technicians to improve technical skills, productivity, quality, and safety performance. Monitor employee attendance, performance, productivity, and compliance with company policies. Assist management with evaluating employee performance and identifying training or staffing needs. Coordinate emergency fiber restoration activities and respond to outages when required. Maintain effective communication with field personnel and management regarding project progress, delays, material shortages, safety concerns, and other issues. Support multiple projects or crews as operational needs require. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous experience with fiber optic splicing, testing, troubleshooting, and restoration. Prior supervisory, lead technician, or field leadership experience preferred. Strong understanding of fiber optic networks, cable types, splice closures, enclosures, cabinets, and related telecommunications infrastructure. Experience operating fusion splicing equipment, OTDRs, optical power meters, and related fiber testing equipment. Ability to read and interpret splice plans, fiber matrices, engineering drawings, prints, maps, and construction documentation. Knowledge of fiber testing standards, acceptable loss thresholds, and troubleshooting techniques. Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple crews, assignments, and priorities in a fast-paced field environment. Basic computer skills and ability to complete electronic reports and project documentation. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Ability to travel and work varying schedules based on project requirements. Physical Requirements Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions. Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, kneel, and perform field-related activities for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry tools, equipment, and materials as required. Ability to work around active construction sites, roadways, utility infrastructure, aerial facilities, underground facilities, and confined work areas as applicable. Ability to work nights, weekends, extended hours, or on-call assignments when required for scheduled work or emergency restoration. Preferred Experience Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH), FTTx, long-haul, metro, backbone, or telecommunications construction experience. Experience supervising multiple fiber splicing crews. Experience with ribbon and single-fiber fusion splicing. Experience troubleshooting live fiber networks and supporting emergency restoration. Familiarity with fiber management and project documentation systems. OSHA, traffic control, confined-space, first aid/CPR, or other applicable industry certifications.
