Job Description

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer — Marine Products (SolidWorks) Lake Lite, Inc.
  • Avilla, Indiana (on-site — not a remote position)
  • Full-time
  • Small in-house engineering team $90,000 - $115,000 / year, based on experience You'd be the third engineer on a small in-house team.
Lake Lite has two experienced engineers on staff — our lead product development engineer and our controls/electrical engineer. You'll have peers who know why every product is built the way it is, design reviews that are real conversations, and someone to hand a stubborn problem to at 4 p.m. We hire the person, then build the role. We're not filling a slot on an org chart. If you're strong in an area we hadn't planned for — machine design, automation, product management, something we haven't thought of — that becomes part of what you do here. Tell us what you're best at and we'll aim the work at it. Design products people actually use. Lake Lite is a 25-person design and manufacturing company in Avilla, Indiana, and our product line covers the waterfront — literally. We build controls for every style of boat lift on the market: cable lifts, hydraulic lifts, air-displacement lifts, coastal lifts, and powered boat lift screens. We develop solar charging kits for boat lifts, advanced solar lighting for docks and residential applications, and a growing lineup of marine and waterfront equipment — all designed, engineered, prototyped, and produced under one roof. Not a boring one-product job. You'll run multiple projects simultaneously in a rapid-development environment, taking products from napkin sketch through prototyping, validation, and onto the production floor — then seeing them running on lakes and coastlines across the country. Decisions happen in days, not quarters. There are no layers of management and no waiting six months for a budget approval. Who you'll work with Lead Product Development Engineer — your first stop when you need to know why a part is the way it is, and the person who'll review your designs before they go to a supplier.
Controls / Electrical
Engineer — most of our products are electromechanical, so you'll co-design enclosures, mounts, and mechanisms with them rather than throwing designs over a wall. The owner — directly, daily. He's an engineer and product developer himself, not a spreadsheet layer between you and the work. Production, purchasing, and sales — all in the same building, so you find out fast whether your design was actually manufacturable. What you'll own 3D design of new products in SolidWorks — parts, assemblies, drawings, design tables, and BOMs — engineered for manufacturing, testing, and real-world use Taking products from concept through prototyping (3D printing in-house), validation, and release to production Preparing designs for outside machining and production: technical drawings and specs our suppliers and production team can build from the first time Continuous improvement of existing products, revision control (ECN/ECR), and keeping documentation current Hands-on prototyping and fixturing — including time on our 5-axis CNC if you have (or want to build) CAM skills What you must bring 5+ years designing physical products that people use — we'll ask you to walk us through them
Advanced SolidWorks:
complex parts and assemblies, drawings, design tables, BOMs A working knowledge of manufacturing processes — you design parts that can actually be made at a sane cost
Self-direction:
you can run multiple projects without someone assigning your next task Nice to have (tell us if you've got it) CAM programming and 5-axis machining experience PLC, automation, or controls design exposure Experience writing assembly instructions, SOPs, or user documentation Marine, outdoor, or harsh-environment product experience A note on credentials: an engineering degree is welcome but not required. If you're self-taught and have a portfolio of real products to prove it, we'd rather see the portfolio than the diploma. Benefits 3 weeks paid vacation + 1 week paid wellness days + 13 paid holidays Health insurance with company-funded HSA contribution (spouse & dependent coverage available) Profit sharing plan and annual reviews Where we are Avilla, Indiana — about 30 minutes north of Fort Wayne, 10 minutes from Kendallville, 20 from Auburn, and an easy drive from Columbia City, Ligonier, Angola, and the Warsaw/Winona Lake area. On-site, five days a week: this is hands-on product work with a machine shop, a prototype bench, and a production floor in the same building. How to apply Send your resume and — more importantly — examples of products you've designed and built (photos, drawings, links, anything). Applications that include a portfolio go to the top of the pile. We read everything and respond within two business days.
