Job Title:
Flagger Job Description The Flagger is responsible for safely directing the flow of vehicles and pedestrians around active construction and paving sites, helping both construction crews and motorists avoid hazards associated with roadwork. This role plays a critical part in maintaining a safe work zone by managing traffic patterns and clearly communicating directions to drivers and team members. Responsibilities Set up temporary work zones, including placing warning signs, traffic cones, stop/slow paddles, rumble strips, and other traffic control devices according to safety standards. Maintain traffic control setups throughout the workday, regularly monitoring and adjusting signs, cones, and other equipment to reflect changing site conditions. Remove temporary work zones at the end of each project or shift, ensuring all traffic control devices and materials are collected and the area is left in a safe condition. Guide vehicle traffic safely through and around construction and paving areas using stop/slow paddles, hand signals, and clear communication. Direct pedestrians safely around work zones, identifying safe routes and preventing entry into hazardous areas. Continuously observe traffic flow and construction activities to anticipate and respond quickly to potential safety risks. Communicate effectively with construction crews, equipment operators, and other flaggers to coordinate traffic control and ensure a safe work environment. Follow all applicable traffic management and safety procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment. Remain alert and attentive for extended periods while standing, moving, and repositioning traffic control devices as needed. Essential Skills Valid flagger card or flagger certification. Proven ability to perform traffic control and traffic management duties in active construction or paving environments. Experience working as a flagger, traffic control worker, or construction laborer supporting roadwork or similar projects. Strong understanding of work zone safety practices and procedures. Ability to stand for long periods and work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Capability to communicate clearly with drivers, pedestrians, and construction crew members. Attention to detail and situational awareness in high-traffic, potentially hazardous environments. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience on paving or road construction projects. Familiarity with setting up and maintaining temporary traffic control devices such as cones, signs, and rumble strips. Comfort working around heavy equipment and moving vehicles. Reliability and punctuality for early starts and changing job site locations. Why Work Here? The role involves standing and walking for extended periods, lifting and placing traffic control devices, and frequently moving between different job sites as projects require. Weather conditions can vary, so you should be prepared to work in heat, cold, rain, or other outdoor elements while wearing appropriate safety gear and attire as required for construction sites. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Batavia, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $27.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
