POSITION SUMMARY

The Township Road Crew Worker performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled manual labor and equipment-operating duties related to the maintenance, repair, and improvement of township roads, rights-of-way, drainage systems, and township property. The employee is expected to work safely and efficiently, properly operate and maintain township equipment, respond to changing weather and road conditions, and perform assigned work with limited supervision. Work may involve outdoor conditions throughout the year, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and other adverse weather conditions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Road Maintenance Perform routine maintenance and repairs on township roads, shoulders, berms, and rights-of-way. Fill potholes and perform patching and other roadway repairs. Grade and maintain gravel and aggregate roads and shoulders. Place, spread, and compact stone, gravel, asphalt, and other road materials. Assist with roadway resurfacing and other road improvement projects. Remove debris, fallen limbs, rocks, and other obstructions from roadways. Inspect roads and report hazardous conditions or needed repairs to the Road Foreman or Township Trustees. Drainage and Ditch Maintenance Clean, repair, and maintain roadside ditches and drainage channels. Remove leaves, debris, sediment, and other obstructions from drainage systems. Maintain and replace culverts and drainage structures as directed. Assist with correcting drainage problems and erosion. Monitor problem areas during and following significant rainfall and report conditions requiring additional attention. Snow and Ice Removal Operate snowplows, salt spreaders, loaders, and other equipment used for winter road maintenance. Plow and treat township roads during snow and ice events. Apply salt, cinders, brine, or other approved materials as directed. Perform winter storm operations, including extended or irregular hours when necessary. Inspect and maintain snow-removal equipment before and during winter operations. Equipment Operation Safely operate township trucks, dump trucks, tractors, loaders, excavators, backhoes, graders, mowers, brush cutters, chainsaws, and other equipment as trained and authorized. Perform daily inspections of assigned equipment. Properly grease, clean, fuel, and perform routine operator maintenance on equipment. Report equipment damage, mechanical problems, or unsafe conditions promptly. Maintain equipment and tools in a clean, safe, and serviceable condition. Mowing and Right-of-Way Maintenance Mow township rights-of-way, roadsides, ditches, and other township property. Trim vegetation and remove brush, trees, and limbs when authorized. Maintain visibility at intersections, signs, and other areas where vegetation creates a safety concern. Assist with tree and brush removal following storms and other events. Signs and Roadside Structures Install, repair, replace, and maintain township road signs and posts. Maintain roadside markers, barricades, cones, and other traffic-control devices. Assist with maintenance of guardrails, culverts, and other roadside structures. Set up appropriate work-zone protection when performing roadway work. General Township Maintenance Assist with maintenance of township buildings, grounds, equipment, and facilities as assigned. Load, unload, transport, and properly store materials and equipment. Assist with cleanup of township properties and work areas. Perform other maintenance and construction-related duties as directed.

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES

Follow all township safety policies, procedures, and work practices. Use required personal protective equipment (PPE). Follow proper procedures when working around moving traffic and heavy equipment. Maintain awareness of hazards involving excavation, electrical utilities, overhead hazards, machinery, weather, and roadway conditions. Attend required safety meetings and training. Immediately report accidents, injuries, near misses, damaged equipment, and unsafe conditions. Never operate equipment without proper training and authorization. Maintain a clean and orderly work area.

WORK REQUIREMENTS

The employee must be able to: Work outdoors for extended periods under varying weather conditions. Work early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, or extended hours when necessary, particularly during snow and ice events or emergency situations. Perform physically demanding work, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing, standing, and walking for extended periods. Safely enter and exit heavy equipment and trucks. Lift and handle materials and equipment appropriate to the assigned task. Work around moving vehicles, heavy equipment, traffic, and other roadway hazards. Follow written and verbal instructions. Work independently as well as effectively with other township employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Valid Ohio driver's license. Ability to safely operate or learn to operate various types of road-maintenance equipment. Ability to follow safety procedures and work instructions. Ability to work effectively as part of a road maintenance crew. Reliable attendance and punctuality. Ability to pass any legally required pre-employment screening. Preferred Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or ability to obtain one within a specified period of employment. Previous experience in road maintenance, construction, excavation, landscaping, agriculture, or heavy-equipment operation. Experience operating dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, excavators, graders, tractors, or similar equipment. Basic mechanical knowledge and ability to perform routine equipment maintenance. Experience with snow and ice removal operations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of basic roadway and drainage maintenance practices. Ability to safely operate trucks and heavy equipment. Ability to recognize roadway, drainage, equipment, and public-safety hazards. Basic mechanical and maintenance skills. Ability to use hand tools and power tools. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, residents, and the public. Ability to maintain accurate records and complete basic work reports. Ability to respond appropriately to changing work conditions and emergency situations.

PUBLIC CONTACT

The Road Crew Worker may have frequent contact with township residents, property owners, contractors, utility personnel, county and state personnel, and other members of the public. Employees are expected to conduct themselves professionally and courteously and to direct complaints, requests, or matters requiring township policy decisions to the Road Foreman or Township Trustees.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is routinely performed outdoors and may involve exposure to: Extreme temperatures Rain, snow, ice, and severe weather Dust, mud, and roadway debris Loud equipment and machinery Traffic and moving vehicles Heavy equipment Uneven terrain Chemicals, fuels, oils, and other maintenance materials Appropriate PPE and safety procedures shall be used as required.

Maintain a professional attitude when dealing with residents and coworkers. Follow the direction of the Road Foreman and Township Trustees. Promptly report roadway hazards, equipment problems, accidents, and other issues. Take reasonable care to protect township property, equipment, materials, and public infrastructure. Work cooperatively with other township employees. Maintain confidentiality regarding township matters when required. Represent the Township in a professional manner while performing official duties.
