The facilities include 15 transmission electron microscopes, four dual-beam and/or scanning electron microscopes, a full suite for Cryo Correlative Microscopy and a dedicated computational infrastructure for data analysis and structural determination. SEMC serves the nine members institutions of NYSBC, provides access and training to the national research community through the NIH-sponsored national centers, and develops and disseminates new technologies. The New York Structural Biology Center (NYSBC) is a global leader in structural biology. The Center's main facility comprises 50,000 square feet in Upper Manhattan and houses advanced instrumentation in Cryoelectron Microscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Protein Production. Its X-ray crystallographic facility is located at the National Synchrotron Light Source II at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. NYSBC is led by world leaders in structural biology and an outstanding staff of 50 researchers. SEMC is seeking a senior laboratory technician to work with the electron microscopy operations team to maintain day-to-day operations. The main duties of this position involve service (assisting users of the facility to make use of the scientific equipment at the center) and maintaining the laboratory spaces. Applicants must be able to work in a multi-tasking environment where priorities may change often and be able to work well with others. We currently operate cryoEM sample preparation laboratories and several EM suites in NYC.
Responsibilities:
Be proactive in problem solving day to day laboratory operations. Have good record keeping, organizational and time management skills. Ensure the sample preparation laboratory is ready for scientific use. Maintain cleanliness in the laboratory spaces. Perform regular maintenance checks on scientific instrumentation. Monitor inventory and manage restocking. Maintain laboratory safety and SOPs. Assist with training and answering questions on laboratory SOPs. Clear communication skills to internal and external users of the facility. Assist with staff coverage for user service at all NYSBC locations.
Required Qualifications and Experience :
A science degree (Bachelors degree or above). Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) are needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment such as the ability to read, write, comprehend, and discuss research materials. Familiar working in a laboratory environment. Comfortable around scientific instrumentation. Basic computer skills (comfortable with Linux environment and web interfaces).
Preferred qualifications:
Degree in biology, structural biology, biophysics, biochemistry, chemistry, engineering, or closely related field. Familiarity with biological research at some level. Proven organizational and time management skills to successfully set priorities meet established deadlines and recognize new problems. Hands-on experience in working in a scientific laboratory in a large team. Able to advise and monitor service technicians when scientific equipment is being repaired.
