SUMMARY Sets up and operates Computer Numerical Control machines or machining centers to perform various functions, such as cutting, drilling, milling, reaming, boring, tapping of metallic, and non-metallic work pieces.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Reads and interprets blueprints, planning sheets, sketches, and related technical data to determine tooling requirements, setup procedures, control setting, and machining methods and sequences. Mounts, aligns, and secures tooling, attachments, and work piece on the machine. Selects and installs cutting tools in machine spindle. Loads control media in machine controller or enters commands to retrieve pre-programmed instructions from database. Calculates and sets machine controls to position spindle in relationship to work piece Regulates factors such as cutting depth, speeds, feeds, and coolant flow. Start machine and monitors displays and machine operation to detect malfunction. Stops machine to change cutting tools and setup according to required machining sequence or to measure parts for conformance to blueprint specification, using precision measuring instruments. Enters commands or manually adjusts machine controls to correct malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining. Operate machines manually to perform non-automated functions. Edits preprogrammed material to tie several programs together and run automatic to control speeds and feeds. Discuss control media errors with supervisor or programming personnel to resolve problems. Occasionally inspects and measures parts, fixtures, and details for follow-up machining. Keeps work area and machine clean and organized. May perform manual maintenance. Operates forklift (requires license).

The employee is required to consistently be able to hear in order to monitor machine sounds, and cutting tool sounds to diagnose changes in order to take appropriate action. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus, to read gauges and precision instruments.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, moving equipment, mold components and operating machinery; fumes and airborne particles (dust and mist), with exposure to oils, cutting fluids, cleaning fluids, solvents, and rust preventatives. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 2-4
years of trade school, vocational education, work experience, or apprenticeship.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
