Job Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Controls Technician III to join our maintenance team at a manufacturing facility in San Leandro, CA. This is a hands-on controls role focused on troubleshooting, maintaining, and optimizing industrial automation and electrical control systems to support safe, reliable, and efficient production. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLCs, Studio 5000/RSLogix 5000, PLC ladder logic, FactoryTalk View, and VFD programming . The role also requires experience troubleshooting motor controls, industrial networks, instrumentation, sensors, and electrical control systems. The Controls Technician will work closely with maintenance and operations teams to diagnose equipment faults, minimize downtime, perform preventive and predictive maintenance, support automation improvements, and maintain reliable plant operations.
Duties:
Install, configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and modify Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLC and HMI systems supporting production equipment. Troubleshoot PLC ladder logic, I/O, control sequences, interlocks, permissives, faults, and equipment communication issues using Studio 5000/RSLogix 5000. Program, configure, troubleshoot, and support VFDs and motor control systems to ensure reliable equipment operation. Diagnose and repair electrical, instrumentation, automation, and control system problems to minimize production downtime. Troubleshoot and support FactoryTalk View / FactoryTalk SE and ME HMI applications. Troubleshoot industrial communication networks, including EtherNet/IP and Modbus RTU/TCP. Use diagnostic and programming tools such as RSLinx, Wireshark, laptop-based software, and electrical testing equipment to identify system faults. Calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain field instrumentation including pressure, flow, temperature, and level devices. Use HART communicators and calibration tools to diagnose and configure field instruments. Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control drawings, and P&IDs for troubleshooting and repairs. Troubleshoot sensors, transmitters, motor starters, VFDs, electrical panels, and other industrial control components. Analyze equipment and control-system faults, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions. Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on PLCs, VFDs, instrumentation, control panels, and automation equipment. Support process control loops and PID applications as needed. Assist with automation upgrades, continuous improvement initiatives, and process optimization projects. Work closely with maintenance, engineering, and operations teams to improve equipment reliability and minimize downtime. Maintain accurate documentation of troubleshooting activities, repairs, system modifications, and maintenance work. Enter and update maintenance activities in Fiix or other CMMS platforms. Follow plant safety procedures and applicable OSHA, LOTO, and electrical safety requirements. Maintain a clean and safe work area while working around industrial machinery, electrical equipment, and varying plant temperatures.
Requirements:
5+ years of hands-on experience troubleshooting and maintaining industrial control systems and automation equipment. Strong hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLCs. Experience using Rockwell Studio 5000 / RSLogix 5000 for PLC troubleshooting and programming. Strong understanding of PLC ladder logic, including common Rockwell instructions, tags, data types, timers, counters, messaging, sequencing, and control logic. Hands-on VFD programming experience is required. Experience troubleshooting and configuring VFDs, motor control systems, sensors, transmitters, and industrial electrical equipment. Experience with FactoryTalk View / FactoryTalk SE / ME. Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols, particularly EtherNet/IP and Modbus RTU/TCP. Ability to troubleshoot electrical and instrumentation systems using a systematic, hands-on approach. Experience calibrating and troubleshooting pressure, flow, temperature, and level instrumentation. Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control drawings, and P&IDs. Experience using diagnostic and troubleshooting tools such as RSLinx, Wireshark, HART communicators, electrical testing equipment, and laptop-based programming tools. Understanding of process control loops and PID control. Familiarity with CMMS systems, such as Fiix or similar maintenance management platforms. Strong problem-solving, analytical, communication, and teamwork skills. Ability to troubleshoot equipment faults, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions with minimal supervision. Associate degree or technical certification in Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation, Controls, or a related field is preferred; equivalent hands-on experience will be considered. Manufacturing experience is preferred, particularly in food & beverage, dairy, or industrial processing environments. Familiarity with LOTO, arc-flash, OSHA, and industrial electrical safety practices is preferred. Training will be provided as needed. Must be comfortable working Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM-3:30 PM, with weekend work, overtime, and schedule flexibility as needed. Must be able to work fully on-site in San Leandro, CA. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in an industrial manufacturing environment with machinery, electrical systems, and varying temperatures. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the assignment without sponsorship or time-limited employment authorization restrictions.
