This role is responsible for interpreting design renderings and translating them into finished surfaces — from base priming and color mixing to foam sculpting, pounce creation, specialty finishes, and final paint application on all scenic pieces moving through the shop. The Scenic Artist & Technician brings both artistry and technical discipline to the work. Color accuracy, surface quality, and attention to detail are the benchmarks by which this role is measured. In addition to painting and finishing, this role participates in general scenic technician duties including assembly support, staging, and on-site installation as project needs require. This role reports directly to the Scenic Production Supervisor and is expected to manage individual project tasks with a high degree of self-direction, communicate proactively when supplies or tools are needed, and maintain a clean, organized workspace at all times. Responsibilities Interpret design renderings, color references, and finish specifications to replicate the designer's intent accurately on all scenic pieces Mix paint colors based on design renderings and color-match to existing pieces or samples, maintaining consistency across all elements of a build Apply prime coats, base coats, faux finishing, and finish coats on a variety of scenic surfaces using airless spray, conventional spray equipment, brush, and roller application methods Execute substrate prep, base painting, and finish painting of all hard pieces of scenery including set pieces, props, platforms, and dimensional elements Paint scenic flats, backdrops, props, and architectural elements to the level of finish specified by each project's design standards Create pounces and stencils for repeatable pattern and graphic applications on scenic surfaces Apply specialty paint treatments, textures, distressing, aging, and decorative finishes as required by each project's design intent Skills Paint mixing and color matching from design references and physical samples Airless spray, conventional spray, brush, and roller application Foam sculpting, carving, sanding, hard coating, and surface preparation Pounce and stencil creation for repeatable graphic applications Specialty finishes: aging, distressing, texture, decorative surface treatments, faux finishing Basic hand and power tool proficiency for general assembly and fabrication support Proper handling, storage, and disposal of paints, solvents, and finishing materials Join us in creating extraordinary visual experiences!
