Position Summary Furniture Design Services is seeking a skilled and dependable Cabinetry Finisher to join our team. This role is ideal for either an experienced trade professional (5-10 years in finishing/woodworking) looking to bring their expertise to a high-end custom shop, or an established woodworker/craftsperson looking to commit to a specialized, long-term career in cabinetry finishing. Working under the direction of the Floor Manager, you will play a key role in executing high-end finish applications—including staining, painting, clear coating, and detailed surface prep. You will maintain quality control, ensure proper shop workflow, and mentor junior helpers as needed. Responsibilities

• Execute high-quality finish applications including staining, toning, custom color matching, painting, clear coating, and specialty finishes.
• Formulate and mix custom stains, dyes, and glazes to match designer or client samples.
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot spray equipment, including HVLP systems and air-assisted sprayers.
• Perform and oversee detail sanding, wood preparation, and surface defect correction.
• Manage finish department workflow, including masking, labeling, staging, and handling custom wood components.
• Maintain spray booths, equipment, tools, and finishing areas in clean, safe working order.
• Ensure all outgoing pieces meet company quality and aesthetic standards before installation.
• Assist in basic woodworking or shop tasks when necessary to support overall production schedules.
• Maintain strict adherence to shop safety protocols, ventilation, and material handling guidelines.
• Help guide and train junior shop helpers on surface prep and finishing fundamentals. Qualifications

Experience :

5-10 years of professional finishing, cabinetmaking, or high-end woodworking experience strongly preferred. Candidates with significant general woodworking experience who are dedicated to mastering finishing will also be considered.

Technical Expertise :

Hands-on experience with modern finishing chemistry, specifically 2K polyurethanes, conversion varnishes, lacquers, and waterborne finishes.

Equipment Proficiency :

Proven experience setting up, operating, cleaning, and maintaining HVLP systems and spray equipment.

Color Matching :

Ability to formulate custom stains and accurately match existing finishes or designer control samples.

• Deep understanding of wood species, sanding progressions, sealers, and topcoats.
• Strong eye for detail, color consistency, and high-end surface inspection.
• Self-motivated, punctual, and able to work efficiently in a fast-paced custom shop environment.
• Physical ability to stand for long periods, perform repetitive movements, and safely lift/move heavy wood components and materials.
• Willingness to work safely around dust, spray equipment, and finishing materials using required PPE.
