Job Description
Position SummaryThe Tool Room CNC Set-Up / Operator is responsible for setting up and operating CNC machinery to produce precision components to close tolerances, typically within ±0.001 inch.
The position performs machining operations including boring, milling, drilling, thread milling, rigid tapping, and related processes. The CNC Set-Up / Operator will interpret technical drawings, load and adjust CNC programs, make machine offsets and setup adjustments, perform in-process inspections, and ensure finished components meet required quality and dimensional specifications.
Key ResponsibilitiesCNC Machine Setup & OperationSet up and operate CNC machinery to produce precision components according to work instructions and engineering specifications.
Download and load preset CNC programs into machines.
Make necessary adjustments to machine sequences, offsets, tooling, and cutting parameters.
Perform machining operations including:
BoringMillingDrillingThread millingRigid tappingOther precision machining operations as required.
Set and adjust machine tapers, offsets, tooling, and related parameters.
Monitor machine performance and make adjustments to maintain part quality and dimensional accuracy.
Complete machine setup and changeovers as required.
Blueprint & Technical Drawing InterpretationRead and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and work instructions.
Determine appropriate machine setup, tooling, and production methods based on technical requirements.
Understand dimensions, tolerances, and GD&T requirements.
Quality InspectionPerform in-process inspections to verify parts meet required specifications.
Inspect components for dimensional accuracy, defects, and other quality issues.
Record inspection results accurately.
Make appropriate machine or program adjustments when deviations are identified.
Notify the appropriate personnel when quality or production issues cannot be resolved independently.
Follow established ISO, quality, and inspection procedures.
Machine Maintenance & Work AreaPerform basic preventative maintenance on CNC equipment.
Change coolants, filters, and other consumable machine components as required.
Keep machines, tooling, equipment, and work areas clean and organized.
Follow all established safety procedures and PPE requirements.
Participate in special projects and other manufacturing activities as assigned.
Required Skills & CompetenciesStrong hands-on CNC machine setup and operating experience.
Ability to consistently machine components to close tolerances, including ±0.001 inch where required.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints.
Working knowledge of GD&T and SPC.Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, offsets, and machine adjustments.
Basic to intermediate mathematical skills, including algebra and geometry.
Basic to intermediate computer skills.
Strong attention to detail and quality awareness.
Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
Strong communication and listening skills.
Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment.
Qualifications & ExperienceEducationHigh school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
Vocational or technical training/certification preferred.
ExperienceMinimum 3 years of relevant CNC machining, setup, or tool room experience.
Experience setting up and operating CNC machining equipment.
Experience producing precision components to close tolerances.
Experience with in-process inspection and quality documentation.
Experience working in an ISO-certified manufacturing environment preferred.
Preferred Technical ExperienceExperience with Mastercam or other CNC programming software is a plus but not required.
Familiarity with SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
Experience with ERP systems preferred.
Experience with Syteline ERP is a plus.
Knowledge of SPC and statistical quality practices.
Experience working with tooling and precision components in a tool room or manufacturing environment.
Quality & ISO RequirementsFollow established quality management systems and ISO procedures.
Maintain accurate inspection and production records.
Identify and communicate quality deviations promptly.
Follow established procedures for machine operation, inspection, documentation, and corrective actions.
Maintain a strong focus on precision, consistency, and product quality.
Physical RequirementsAbility to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance.
Position requires approximately 80% of working time on your feet, including walking, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
Ability to work in a manufacturing/tool room environment.
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment in designated areas.
Must have sufficient close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus to perform machining and inspection tasks safely and accurately.
