We are a growing civil and geotechnical engineering firm headquartered in Beckley, WV, serving energy, mining, and infrastructure clients across southern West Virginia and the Appalachian region. We are looking for a seasoned Survey Crew Chief / Instrument Operator with 5 or more years of field experience to take a lead role on our survey crews. The ideal candidate is a confident, self-directed professional who can run a survey party, deliver precise results independently, and mentor junior crew members — all across the diverse and demanding terrain of southern WV. What you'll do: Lead day-to-day field survey operations, directing crew members and managing work plans to meet project schedules and quality standards Operate total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, RTK equipment, robotic instruments, and electronic data collectors with a high degree of proficiency and independence Perform and oversee topographic, boundary, ALTA/NSPS, route, and construction stakeout surveys on energy, mining, and infrastructure projects Recover and set property corners, traverse control points, and benchmarks with accuracy and proper documentation for licensed review and certification Maintain thorough, accurate field notes and daily records of survey activities, observations, and crew activities for project documentation Download, process, and import field data into Carlson Survey and AutoCAD Civil 3D, and assist with office drafting and plan preparation as needed Mentor and guide junior survey technicians and rod persons, fostering safe work practices and professional development Assist with courthouse and deed research, metes-and-bounds interpretation, and review of plats and deeds in support of boundary surveys Manage and maintain survey equipment inventory, ensuring instruments are properly calibrated, serviced, and field-ready What you'll bring to the role: High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree or coursework in surveying, engineering technology, or GIS is a plus 5 or more years of hands-on field surveying experience with demonstrated proficiency operating total stations, GPS/GNSS systems, and data collectors Proven ability to run a survey crew independently, make sound field decisions, and deliver accurate, well-documented results Strong working knowledge of survey mathematics including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and coordinate geometry computations Experience reading and interpreting construction plans, property plats, legal descriptions, and WV county land records Physical ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, traverse steep and rugged Appalachian terrain, and lift and carry up to 50 lbs daily Strong communication skills and the ability to work professionally with engineers, clients, and contractors in the field Valid driver's license with a clean driving record — daily travel to project sites across southern WV and surrounding counties is required It would be great if you have: West Virginia Surveyor-in-Training (SIT) certification or active Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license Proficiency with Carlson Survey, AutoCAD Civil 3D, or similar software for data processing and drafting support Prior experience on energy, mining, pipeline, or construction stakeout projects in West Virginia or Appalachia Experience with robotic total stations, drone/UAV survey support, or terrestrial LiDAR scanning Familiarity with WV metes-and-bounds boundary work and courthouse deed and plat research

$25.00 - $32.00 per hour
