We are a growing civil and geotechnical engineering firm headquartered in Beckley, WV, serving energy, mining, and infrastructure clients across southern West Virginia and the Appalachian region. We are looking for a motivated Survey Technician / Instrument Operator to join our survey crew and support field operations across a wide variety of project types — from boundary and topographic surveys to construction stakeout on active mine and energy sites. What you'll do: Operate total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, RTK equipment, automatic levels, and electronic data collectors to gather field measurements for engineering and boundary surveys Perform topographic, boundary, ALTA/NSPS, and route surveys under the supervision of a licensed Professional Land Surveyor Conduct construction stakeout surveys for grading, utilities, structures, and mine site infrastructure Recover and set property corners, traverse control points, and benchmarks for boundary and engineering surveys Maintain accurate field notes, sketches, and daily records of survey activities and observations Assist with downloading, processing, and importing field data into Carlson Survey and AutoCAD Civil 3D Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and basic calibration of survey instruments and field equipment Assist with courthouse and deed research to support boundary survey preparation as needed What you'll bring to the role: High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree or coursework in surveying, engineering technology, GIS, or a related field is a plus 0-5 years of field surveying experience — we welcome both entry-level candidates and experienced instrument operators Basic knowledge of land surveying principles and equipment including total stations, GPS/GNSS, and automatic levels Working knowledge of basic mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as applied to survey computations Physical ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, traverse steep and rugged Appalachian terrain, and lift and carry up to 50 lbs Strong attention to detail, dependable work ethic, and ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately Valid driver's license with a clean driving record — daily travel to project sites across southern WV is required Nice to have: West Virginia Surveyor-in-Training (SIT) certification or active pursuit of SIT status Experience with Carlson Survey, AutoCAD Civil 3D, or similar survey/CAD software for office processing and drafting Prior experience on energy, mining, or pipeline survey projects in West Virginia or Appalachia Familiarity with deed and plat research, metes-and-bounds descriptions, and WV county land records Experience with robotic total stations or drone/UAV survey support

Pay:

$18.00 - $22.00 per hour
