Job Description

JACO ENGINEERING

Precision Machining for the Aerospace & Defense Industries — Anaheim, California Precision CNC Machinist — Vertical Mill (Lathe a Plus) Aircraft & Medical-Grade Parts

• 7-10 Years Hands-On Experience

• Full Time, On-Site (Anaheim, CA)

POSITION SUMMARY

Jaco Engineering is an established Anaheim precision machine shop producing close-tolerance machined components for the aerospace and defense industries. We are seeking an experienced precision CNC Machinist for first shift, working mainly on vertical milling machines with some lathe work. We are looking for a real machinist — someone with years of actual, hands-on time making precision parts, not just loading and unloading. The right candidate has seven to ten years machining aircraft or medical parts, knows sound general machine shop practices and methods, and understands how to approach aircraft-grade alloys and heat-treated materials: tooling, feeds and speeds, workholding, sequence of operations, and holding tight tolerances through a run. Above all, you must be able to set up a machine on your own and troubleshoot it when the part isn't coming out right. Basic G-code knowledge is expected; Mastercam programming is a strong plus but not required. 5-axis experience is a plus but is not required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Operate CNC vertical milling machines (3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis) to produce close-tolerance machined parts for aerospace and defense customers; run CNC lathe work as needed. Machine aircraft-grade aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, alloy steels, and heat-treated materials, applying the right cutters, feeds and speeds, coolant, and methods for each material to hold tolerance and finish. Interpret precision machined part blueprints, GD&T callouts, and written work instructions to understand every feature and tolerance before running the job. Design and build tooling and part-holding fixtures — fixture plates, soft jaws, and custom workholding — that locate and hold the part securely and repeatably for machining. Work with the planning engineer and programmer to set up each operation: zero in the part-holding fixtures, load the appropriate cutting tool holders into the machine, load cutting tool offsets, load the NC program, then validate the program and prove out a first article part that conforms to the specifications of that operation.

Troubleshoot at the machine:

diagnose and correct size, finish, chatter, tool wear, deflection, and workholding problems; report program issues found during proveout so they can be corrected. Adjust offsets at the control on Fanuc and Siemens Cellos controllers to hold size and correct in-process conditions. Load and run production parts, change cutting tools and inserts, and make the offset and speed/feed adjustments needed to maintain quality and tool life. Inspect work pieces during production using micrometers, calipers, bore gages, thread gages, indicators, and related instruments; complete inspection documentation accurately.

Apply good shop practice throughout:

deburring and part handling, protecting finished surfaces, tracking material and heat-treat condition, and following first-piece and in-process inspection requirements. Make recommendations to the planning and programming teams on the best cutting tools, cutting tool holders, and feeds and speeds for each job; suggest needed part-holding and tooling designs; and work with the engineering team to develop the best tooling and workholding options for each part and to improve the process.

Meet production goals:

track part counts, update data entry and timekeeping stations, and communicate status and problems promptly. Organize and maintain shop tooling, including tool accountability and returning tooling to its proper location. Assist with routine machine upkeep — coolant, chip removal, cleaning — and keep the machine and surrounding work area clean and orderly. Support the management team with other duties as assigned in a positive, team-oriented manner.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Seven (7) to ten (10) years of hands-on experience as a precision CNC machinist, actually machining parts, in an aerospace, defense, or medical device machine shop. Proven ability to set up a CNC machine independently — fixtures, vises, and workholding, tooling and tool offsets, work offsets and part zero, program verification, and first-article inspection — and run good parts from it. This is a core requirement of the position. Hands-on experience designing and building tooling and part-holding fixtures for precision machined parts. Working knowledge of cutting tools and cutting tool holders (collet, end mill, shell mill, shrink-fit, and hydraulic holders), and the ability to recommend the best cutters, holders, and feeds and speeds for the material and operation. Strong troubleshooting skills at the machine: finding and fixing the root cause of size, finish, chatter, tool life, deflection, and workholding problems.

Strong CNC vertical mill experience:

3-axis and 4-axis / 4+ axis work on close-tolerance precision parts. Some CNC lathe / turning center experience: OD and ID turning, boring, facing, grooving, and threading. Solid working knowledge of general machine shop practices and methods: cutter selection, feeds and speeds, workholding, sequence of operations, managing heat and stress in the part, and holding tolerance and surface finish. Experience machining aircraft-grade alloys (aluminum, stainless, titanium, alloy and tool steels) and heat-treated materials to close tolerances. Basic knowledge of G-code; some at-the-machine programming experience is helpful. Experience with Fanuc and/or Siemens controls, including making offset adjustments at the control. Ability to read and interpret mechanical engineering drawings for precision machined parts, including GD&T. Ability to inspect parts using micrometers, calipers, bore gages, thread gages, indicators, and other related measuring instruments, and to complete inspection records. Ability to change cutting tools and inserts and make offset adjustments to hold size throughout a production run. Functional English — able to speak, read, and write English well enough to follow blueprints, work instructions, and written procedures and to document work clearly. Mechanical aptitude and a practical, problem-solving approach to shop work. U.S. Citizen or U.S. Person as defined under ITAR (22 CFR 120.62) — required for access to controlled technical data on U.S. Government defense contracts.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Mastercam programming knowledge. A strong plus, but not required. Experience proving out furnished CNC programs and working directly with the programmer to resolve program, tooling, and workholding issues. 5-axis milling experience, especially on true trunnion-based machines (DMG Mori DMU or comparable). A plus, but not required. Mori Seiki, Mazak, or other Fanuc- and Siemens-controlled machine experience; Siemens Cellos control experience. Knowledge of or experience with modular workholding and fixturing systems, such as zero-point fixturing. A plus. Horizontal milling experience. Manual mill and lathe experience. Experience inspecting parts on the machine using built-in touch probe capability. Experience in an AS9100- or ISO 13485-certified aerospace, defense, or medical machine shop.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & PRE-EMPLOYMENT

Ability to lift 40+ lbs. Ability to stand and work at a machine for a ten-hour shift. Ability to work in a noisy shop environment. Ability to pass pre-employment physical screening. Employment references may be requested to confirm prior employers and length of employment.

SCHEDULE, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Full-time, permanent, first-shift position in a clean, air-conditioned facility. Monday through Thursday, four ten-hour days (40 hours) first shift, with the possibility of overtime on Fridays. Exact schedule to be negotiated. Competitive pay based on experience, setup ability, and troubleshooting skill. Company-paid medical and dental coverage. Paid holidays, vacation, and
