CNC Machinist Job Description This role involves setting up and operating CNC mills and lathes in a custom steel and cast iron fabrication job shop that also performs general machining, waterjet, and plasma cutting. You will produce precision parts in varying production runs, ranging from small batches of approximately 50 pieces to larger runs of up to 1,000 pieces, working primarily with steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and plastics. The position requires strong technical skills in CNC machining, setup, and quality inspection, as well as the ability to read blueprints and make program adjustments using Fanuc controls. Responsibilities Set up, program, and operate CNC mills and lathes to produce precision components from steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and plastics. Run production jobs in a job shop environment with batch sizes typically ranging from 50 to 1,000 pieces. Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and job specifications to determine machining requirements. Perform machine setups, including selecting and installing tooling, setting work offsets, and verifying programs before production. Use Fanuc controls to run CNC equipment and make basic G-code edits or program adjustments as needed. Select appropriate cutting tools, speeds, and feeds to optimize quality, efficiency, and tool life. Operate manual equipment, such as drill presses and other shop machinery, as needed to support production. Inspect finished parts using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and other gauges to ensure tight tolerances and quality standards. Monitor machines during operation, troubleshoot issues, and make mechanical or program adjustments to maintain consistent part quality. Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area and follow all shop safety procedures. Collaborate with team members and supervisors to resolve machining challenges and meet production deadlines. Essential Skills Minimum of 3 years of experience as a CNC Machinist. Proficiency in setting up and operating CNC mills and lathes. Hands-on experience with Fanuc controls, including making basic G-code edits and program adjustments. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and job specifications. Strong CNC setup skills, including tooling selection, workholding, and offset setting. Experience working with steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and plastics. Proficiency in using precision measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers for quality inspection. Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills for addressing machining and equipment issues. Ability to operate manual machining equipment, including drill presses and related shop tools. Capability to work independently on first shift and manage multiple jobs in a job shop environment. Work Environment The role is based in a family-owned and operated machine shop that has been in business since 1978 and currently employs around 20 people, creating a tight-knit, team-oriented atmosphere. You will work with CNC machines, lathes, milling equipment, and additional processes such as waterjet and plasma cutting in a general machining and fabrication environment. This is a first shift position, Monday through Friday, with a 6:00 a.m. start time. Typical hours are 10-hour days Monday through Thursday and 8 hours on Friday, with a 30-minute lunch break. The dress code includes blue jeans, a t-shirt, and steel-toe footwear, suitable for a hands-on, shop-floor environment that emphasizes safety and practicality. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Mount Bethel, PA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
