Position Overview:
Our client in Elkhart, IN, is looking for an experienced Precision Machinist / Machine Setup Operator to join their growing manufacturing team. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled machinist or setup operator who enjoys hands-on work, mechanical troubleshooting, and producing high-quality precision components. In this role, you'll be responsible for setting up, operating, troubleshooting, and optimizing automatic screw machines to support production goals while maintaining high quality and safety standards. Direct experience with Brown & Sharpe or ACME-Gridley machines is helpful but not required. Candidates with transferable experience involving CNC equipment, manual machining, lathes, multi-spindle machines, production equipment, tooling, or mechanical machine setups are encouraged to apply. If you have strong mechanical aptitude, understand how machines and tooling work, and are comfortable learning older mechanically driven equipment, we want to speak with you.
What You'll Do:
Set up and operate automatic screw machines according to production schedules and job requirements Review work orders, blueprints, engineering drawings, specifications, and setup instructions before production Install, adjust, and fine-tune tooling, cams, attachments, guides, feeds, speeds, and other machine components Perform machine changeovers and setup adjustments to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime Verify first-piece approval before releasing parts into production Load raw materials and monitor machine performance throughout production runs Make routine machine and tooling adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy, part quality, and production efficiency Inspect finished parts using precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other inspection tools Troubleshoot machine, tooling, production, and quality issues to keep operations running smoothly Identify defects or abnormal machine conditions and take appropriate corrective action Communicate machine, tooling, maintenance, and quality concerns to supervisors and support teams Complete production, scrap, downtime, quality, and inspection documentation accurately and on time Perform routine machine cleaning, lubrication, and basic preventive maintenance Follow all company safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout requirements Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment Collaborate with supervisors, quality personnel, maintenance teams, and production employees to achieve manufacturing goals Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, productivity, and efficiency Assist with training and mentoring other machine operators as needed
What We're Looking For:
Previous machining, machine setup, or skilled machine operating experience Experience with Brown & Sharpe or ACME-Gridley machines is helpful but not required Transferable experience with CNC machines, manual machines, lathes, multi-spindle equipment, screw machines, or other production machinery Strong mechanical aptitude and machine troubleshooting skills Ability to perform machine setups, tooling adjustments, and changeovers independently Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, specifications, work orders, and setup instructions Experience using precision measuring and inspection equipment, including micrometers, calipers, and gauges Basic math skills, including decimals and standard measurements Ability to recognize machine, tooling, production, and quality issues Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship Dependable work ethic and strong attendance Ability to communicate effectively with production, quality, maintenance, and supervisory personnel Ability to work independently and as part of a team Willingness and ability to learn older mechanically driven production equipment Commitment to workplace safety and continuous improvement
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience performing complete machine setups, tooling changes, and production changeovers Experience with automatic screw machines or multi-spindle production equipment Brown & Sharpe or ACME-Gridley machine experience CNC, manual machining, lathe, or other precision-machining experience Experience working in a high-volume manufacturing environment Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles Experience supporting continuous improvement initiatives Basic preventive maintenance experience Forklift or overhead crane experience
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift Ability to lift up to 50 pounds Ability to frequently bend, stoop, reach, grasp, push, pull, and perform repetitive motions Ability to safely handle materials and parts, with assistance or lifting devices when necessary Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment Ability to work safely around moving machinery, machine noise, lubricants, oils, and other manufacturing processes Send your resume to
