Job Description
SUMMARY A
Tool Maker/Machine Builder at QA Technology will fabricate close tolerance machine components from detail drawings, make gages to support production part quality, and complete the fit and finish of in-house production equipment. They will use a variety of manual and conversational machines. They will work closely with engineers, CNC Machinists, and EDM Machinists, to generate fully functional tooling and prototype new products. They will also support the debugging, and maintenance of all current custom assembly machines.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ability to self-manage parts and packages; organizing timelines, resources, and materials to aid engineering implementation for internal production needs.
- Ability to collaborate with CNC machinists, EDM Machinists, production machinists, and vendors to create an efficient path toward the best component possible.
- Set up and operate the full range of manual machine tool equipment such as band saw, lathe, mill, grinder, jig bore, tool-post grinder, and hone the perform work involving creative setups, unusually close tolerances, and critical dimensions.
- Ability and willingness to communicate solutions to resolve mechanical problems during the build and debugging of assembly equipment.
- Willingness to support the repair of production equipment when necessary to ensure continued product output.
- Utilize precision measurement tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, gage block/pins, comparator, small bore gages, indicators, Cadillac gage, etc.) to inspect parts and verify dimensions and quality of work.
- Design and build fixtures necessary for part quality.
- Perform basic mathematic and trigonometric calculations to interpret drawings and inspect dimensions.
- Machine a variety of materials such as plastic (filled and unfilled), aluminum (6061, 2024, 7075), tool steels, nickel-based alloys, brass, bronzes, and stainless steels.
- Deburr and finish parts to a high standard of workmanship.
- Perform general machine maintenance as required.
- Provide ongoing input to supervisor/management for continuous improvements.
- Perform general housekeeping of the work area.
- Attendance is an essential function of this position.
- Other duties may be assigned.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High School, GED, or trade school education with a tool making apprenticeship or the equivalent followed by a minimum of five (5) years of toolmaking, tool and die, mold making, gage making, or assembly machine building experience.DESIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Experience with ProtoTrak mills, lathes, and MillPWR mills or equivalent CNC machining centers.
- Experience with micro drilling and/or gun drilling.
- Experience in Tig, Mig, brazing, and silver solder.
- Certificates or experience with Solidworks, edrawings, Microsoft Office Products.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Standing on anti-fatigue mats for the majority of the shift.
- Ability to lift 20lbs materials.

QA's Tool Makers are accustomed to having their own tools. The Tool Maker/Machine Builder is part of QA's tool room. The workspace is climate-controlled, brightly lit, routinely cleaned, organized, and quiet. The tool room is surrounded by large windows overlooking the grounds. Private benches are assigned to each tool maker. At QA, we treasure collaboration.
