POSITION SUMMARY

The Machinist - 1st Class is a senior-level precision machinist responsible for the full-cycle setup and operation of conventional, special-purpose, and CNC/NC machining centers. This role requires the ability to write CNC programs from scratch, design and build holding fixtures, support first-article and prototype work, reverse-engineer parts, and collaborate with supervision and management to resolve complex machining challenges. The 1st Class Machinist serves as a key technical resource on the shop floor and provides guidance to less experienced machinists.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Set up and operate conventional, special-purpose, and CNC/NC machine tools and machining centers to fabricate metallic and non-metallic parts to print. Write CNC programs from scratch using G-code/M-code and/or CAM software; calculate and apply machining parameters including speed, feed, depth of cut, and tool angles; manage program files and folder structure on the company server. Read, study, and interpret complex blueprints, GD&T callouts, and engineering specifications to determine dimensions, tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements. Design, build, and select material for workholding fixtures, jigs, and custom cutting tools for mills, lathes, and other machine tools. Set up and operate machines for first-article and prototype parts; verify accuracy of machine settings and programmed data prior to production release. Develop specifications from general descriptions; reverse-engineer parts and produce detail prints of parts, jigs, and fixtures to be fabricated. Install machined replacement parts; test operation of assemblies to verify functionality and performance. Confer with supervision and management to resolve machining or assembly problems and estimate time and cost for production operations. Complete all required quality documentation including SPC, first-article inspection records, labor cards, job tickets, and non-conformance reports; identify and segregate non-conforming material. Provide hands-on technical guidance and mentorship to 2nd and 3rd Class Machinists. Maintain a clean, organized work area in accordance with 5S standards; perform routine and preventive machine maintenance. Comply with all safety procedures, PPE requirements, and Good Shop Practices in accordance with the company's

AS9100D/ISO 9001

quality management system. Perform other duties of a similar or lesser complexity as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Hands-on machining experience is the primary qualifier; associate degree in machining technology or manufacturing, journey-level apprenticeship completion, or equivalent trade credentials are a plus.

Experience:

5+ years of progressive precision machining experience including CNC programming, complex setups, and first-article work in a job shop or aerospace/industrial manufacturing environment.

Technical Skills:

Expert proficiency in CNC programming (G-code/M-code), blueprint reading, and GD&T; ability to design fixtures and build tools; proficiency with CMM and full range of precision measuring instruments; CAM software experience (Mastercam, Fusion 360, or similar) preferred; experience with shop floor ERP/MES software (e.g., ProShop) preferred.

Math:

Applied geometry, trigonometry, and arithmetic; ability to independently calculate machining parameters and interpret engineering tolerances.

Regulatory:

Must be eligible to access ITAR-controlled technical data in compliance with 22 CFR Part 120-130.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

Must be able to frequently lift/carry up to 25 lbs. and occasionally up to 50 lbs. Requires prolonged standing and walking; occasional sitting, reaching, stooping, and crawling. Close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus are required. Work is performed on a manufacturing floor with moderate to high noise levels; appropriate PPE is required at all times.
