Job Description
Job Summary We are seeking an experienced 2nd Shift Lead Machinist to oversee and support machining operations on our second shift. This hands-on leadership role combines skilled machining work with team leadership responsibilities. You will set up and run machines, ensure quality and productivity, train and guide team members, and help maintain a safe, efficient shop floor. The shift is 4-10hr days and overtime as needed on Fridays. Responsibilities Set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC mills, lathes, and/or manual machines to produce precision parts to print specifications. Read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, work instructions, and job travelers. Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, or other measuring tools. Lead and coordinate the 2nd shift machining team: assign work, provide guidance, monitor progress, and help resolve production issues. Train and mentor operators and machinists on setups, tooling, quality standards, and safe work practices. Ensure shift goals for productivity, quality, and on-time delivery are met. Perform minor tool changes, offsets, and basic program edits as needed. Maintain machines, tooling, and work area in clean, organized condition; follow preventive maintenance practices. Enforce safety policies, PPE requirements, and ISO standards. Communicate effectively with 1st shift, supervisors, quality, and programming regarding job status, issues, and handoffs. Support continuous improvement efforts and suggest process enhancements. Experience High school diploma or GED (technical training or apprenticeship preferred). 3+ years of machining experience (CNC and/or manual), including setup and operation. Prior lead, senior, or supervisory experience in a machining or manufacturing environment preferred. Strong ability to read blueprints and apply GD&T. Proficient with precision measuring instruments and inspection techniques. Solid understanding of machining processes, tooling, speeds/feeds, and materials (steel, aluminum, cast iron, etc.). Ability to work independently and lead a small team on 2nd shift with minimal supervision. Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Willingness to work overtime and maintain consistent attendance. Stand for extended periods, and work in a manufacturing environment.
