Job Title:
Machine Operator Lead Location:
Montebello, CA Shift:
2nd Shift — must be available to train on 1st Shift for an initial period before transitioning to 2nd Shift.
Reports To:
Foreman / Plant Management Job Summary We are looking for an experienced Machine Operator Lead to oversee 2nd Shift machining operations while also operating manual grinding machines to shape and finish metal components with precision. This role requires hands-on experience with manual surface grinders, Blanchard, and/or milling machines, along with the ability to lead, train, and hold a team of operators accountable to Schaffer Grinding's quality, safety, and production standards. Candidates will initially train on 1st Shift at the standard Machine Operator pay rate. This training period allows the incoming lead to learn Schaffer Grinding's machines, processes, and shop culture firsthand before assuming full Lead responsibilities and pay on 2nd Shift. Key Responsibilities — Leadership
  • Oversee day-to-day operations on 2nd Shift, ensuring production schedules, quality standards, and safety procedures are consistently followed.
  • Train, coach, and support Machine Operators ensuring they understand proper setup, operation, and safety procedures.
  • Assign and prioritize jobs across operators based on due dates, lead times, and machine availability.
  • Hold operators accountable to company policies and quality expectations; address performance or conduct issues directly and escalate to management when necessary.
  • Ensure all undersized, oversized, or nonconforming findings are reported to Inspection and Plant Management immediately — not held until end of shift.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for 2nd Shift, coordinating with 1st Shift leads and management to ensure a smooth handoff between shifts.
  • Communicate equipment issues, recurring problems, or safety concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor and Plant Management. Key Responsibilities — Machine Operation
  • Operate manual surface grinders, Blanchard, and/or milling machines to grind and finish metal parts to specified dimensions and surface finishes.
  • Set up machine operations, including selecting appropriate wheels, cutters, speeds, and feeds.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and job layouts to determine material requirements and setup procedures.
  • Inspect workpieces using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, etc.) to ensure accuracy and conformance to specifications.
  • Maintain proper documentation of work completed and quality checks, including Shop Traveler Detail entries.
  • Monitor machine performance and make adjustments as needed to maintain accuracy and surface finish.
  • Perform routine maintenance on machines and ensure the work area is kept clean and organized.
  • Follow all shop safety procedures and ensure safe handling of tools and materials. Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; trade school or apprenticeship preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5+ years of hands-on experience operating manual surface grinders, Blanchard, and/or milling machines, with prior lead, trainer, or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of manual machining techniques, feeds and speeds, and grinding wheel selection.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Proficient with precision measuring tools and methods.
  • Solid understanding of material properties, especially steels, tool steels, and aluminum.
  • Ability to work with tight tolerances (±0.001" or better).
  • Demonstrated ability to train others, communicate expectations clearly, and hold team members accountable.
  • Strong attention to detail, patience, and commitment to producing high-quality work. Preferred Skills
  • Knowledge of surface finishes and flatness requirements.
  • Ability to handle multiple jobs and prioritize effectively across a team, not just individually.
  • Prior experience leading a shift with minimal direct supervision from ownership/management. Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and reach for long periods and safely lift, carry, and move tools, equipment, and materials up to 50 lbs. in a machine shop environment; team lift or mechanical assistance required beyond that weight.
  • Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination required.
  • Ability to climb and safely use ladders or step ladders to perform repairs and maintenance at height.
  • Ability to safely enter, maneuver within, and exit tight or confined spaces if required. Workplace Policies — Drugs & Alcohol

Pay:
$22.00 - $30.54 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week
