Job Description

Hood Industries, Inc. is a blend of wood manufacturing and distribution concerns that include plywood and lumber manufacturing plants and twenty-three specialty wood product distribution operations. We are seeking a Green Sorter Operator position at our sawmill located in Waynesboro, MS . You will be responsible for sorting lumber and operating and maintaining factory equipment. Responsibilities:
Operates sorter at production target speeds. Manages all sorter bays to make sure boards are dropping correctly into the bays, lowering bays as they become full. Monitors lumber as it enters and flows through the sorter to make sure it is sorting by length and dimension. Oversee the trash bay and reports if excessive amount of boards are being dropped into the bay. Trouble shoots to determine problems (i.e., broken bay, tipple not firing, etc.). Carefully drops lumber from the bays onto the haul out chains, ensuring that lumber packs are not "split" or damaged. Ability to keep lumber flowing through the sorter to avoid the trimmer being blocked out and ensure the stacker has a steady flow of product. Quickly and safely clears jams to avert unnecessary downtime. Reports excessive amount of or constantly reoccurring, even if minor in nature, issues that are causing downtime. Understands the importance of machine guarding (handrails, chains, individual metal guards), inspects work area to make sure all guards are in place, and stays out of guarded areas unless properly locked out. Uses equipment correctly and immediately reports any damaged equipment to the Supervisor or Lead Person. Wears all required PPE, especially fall protection harness when in the sorter. Keeps assigned area clean (catwalk, sorter cubbies, under sorter haul out chains, etc.).
Education and Experience:
High school diploma/GED preferred. A minimum of six (6) months of work experience in an industrial, manufacturing, warehouse, carpentry, construction, or production environment. Ability to understand, clearly communicate, and follow all safety rules and policies. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Ability to work independently or as part of a team. Ability to make decisions quickly utilizing hand, eye, and foot coordination. Able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. throughout the work shift. Perform tasks such as walking, climbing steps/ladders, sitting, and standing for long periods of time. Able to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, or reach with body, arms, and/or legs. Ability to work outside in all conditions and in and around loud equipment.
