Steel Yard WorkerJob Summary The Steel Yard Worker is responsible for safely handling, organizing, staging, and preparing steel and other materials for C&J Equipment Manufacturing's production operations. This position supports the fabrication, welding, saw/cut, paint, and shipping departments by ensuring steel and materials are properly identified, stored, moved, and available when needed. The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-conscious, physically capable, and willing to work as part of a team in a fast-paced steel manufacturing environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Receive, unload, move, organize, and stage steel and other materials throughout the yard. Assist with loading and unloading trucks, trailers, and material deliveries. Sort and organize steel according to size, type, job, work order, or production requirements. Maintain accurate identification and organization of materials in designated yard locations. Pull and stage steel and materials for production based on work orders and supervisor direction. Assist production employees in locating and retrieving required materials. Handle structural steel, plate, pipe, tubing, and other fabricated materials safely. Assist with preparing materials for cutting, fabrication, welding, painting, and shipping. Use appropriate hand tools and material-handling equipment as trained and authorized. Assist forklift and crane operators with safe material movement when required. Communicate clearly with supervisors, operators, welders, fabricators, and other yard personnel. Inspect materials for visible damage, defects, or incorrect identification and report concerns to supervision. Maintain clean and organized material storage and staging areas. Keep walkways, work areas, and equipment-access areas free of unnecessary hazards. Assist with loading finished products and materials for shipment. Follow all company safety procedures and required PPE requirements. Report unsafe conditions, damaged materials, equipment problems, spills, and injuries immediately. Perform general labor and other yard duties as assigned. Material Handling & Safety Follow proper procedures for handling heavy and oversized steel. Maintain safe distances from forklifts, cranes, trucks, and suspended loads. Never stand or walk beneath suspended loads. Use proper lifting techniques and approved equipment when moving materials. Maintain awareness of pinch points, sharp edges, uneven surfaces, and other yard hazards. Follow all established traffic and pedestrian procedures. Wear required PPE, including safety glasses, work boots, gloves, hearing protection, and other equipment as required. Participate in safety training and follow company safety policies at all times. Qualifications Previous experience in a steel yard, fabrication shop, manufacturing facility, construction, warehouse, or similar industrial environment preferred. Experience handling steel or other heavy materials is a plus. Forklift experience or certification preferred. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to identify and organize materials accurately. Basic ability to read measurements and material tags. Strong awareness of surroundings and commitment to workplace safety. Dependable attendance and punctuality. Ability to work effectively with a team. Willingness to learn new skills and advance within the company. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment as required. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and reach. Ability to work around heavy and oversized steel components. Ability to climb on and off equipment when required. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to work in areas with noise, dust, welding activity, forklifts, cranes, trucks, and other industrial equipment. Ability to wear required PPE throughout the work shift. Work Environment The Steel Yard Worker works primarily outdoors and in an active steel manufacturing environment. The position involves frequent interaction with heavy steel, forklifts, cranes, trucks, fabrication equipment, and production personnel. Employees are expected to maintain a clean, organized, and safety-focused work environment while supporting C&J's production schedule and quality standards. Support production by having materials available when needed. Handle steel and company property carefully. Maintain a clean and safe yard. Communicate material shortages, damage, or safety concerns promptly. Demonstrate reliable attendance and punctuality. Work cooperatively with Yard, Production, Welding, Fabrication, Paint, Saw/Cut, and Shipping teams. Demonstrate a strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
