Job Overview The Wide Format Operator is responsible for preparing files and operating a variety of digital printing and finishing equipment to produce high-quality printed materials accurately and efficiently. This position combines prepress/file preparation, equipment operation, production workflow management, and finishing responsibilities. The ideal candidate is technically capable, detail-oriented, dependable, and comfortable working in a small, collaborative production environment. This individual should enjoy learning new equipment and processes, solving production challenges, expanding their skill set, and identifying ways to make workflows more efficient. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Prepress & File Preparation Review incoming artwork and production files for accuracy, quality, dimensions, resolution, color requirements, bleeds, and other production specifications.

Perform preflight/prepress functions to ensure files are properly prepared for production.

Manipulate and adjust files as necessary to meet production requirements.

Utilize Adobe Illustrator and other graphic design or production software to prepare and modify artwork.

Identify potential file or production issues before printing and communicate concerns as appropriate.

Manage RIP software to prepare, process, and send files to production equipment.

Utilize nesting software to maximize material usage and reduce production waste. Printing & Equipment Operation Set up and operate wide format roll-to-roll printing equipment.

Set up and operate wide format flatbed UV printing equipment.

Operate digital press equipment as assigned.

Operate plotters and other cutting equipment.

Operate laminating equipment and perform related finishing processes.

Select appropriate materials, substrates, settings, and production methods based on job specifications.

Monitor equipment and print quality throughout production runs.

Perform routine equipment care, cleaning, and basic troubleshooting.

Escalate equipment or production issues when additional technical support is required. Production & Workflow Manage multiple jobs and production priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Build and maintain efficient workflows from file preparation through printing and finishing.

Look for opportunities to improve production efficiency, material utilization, quality, and turnaround time.

Effectively utilize available equipment, software, and tools to meet production needs.

Maintain organized files, materials, work areas, and production processes.

Verify completed work against job specifications and established quality standards.

Minimize waste through proper setup, nesting, material handling, and production planning

Be willing to pivot during day to meet an unexpected Rush order or help another operator complete an order to meet service level requirements. Teamwork & Communication Work collaboratively as part of a small production team.

Communicate clearly regarding job requirements, priorities, production status, challenges, and completion.

Be willing to learn and perform multiple roles within the production operation.

Share knowledge and support team members as production needs change.

Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to expand technical skills and responsibilities. Qualifications Required Experience operating wide format printing equipment or comparable digital production equipment.

Working knowledge of prepress/preflight processes and digital file preparation.

Ability to manipulate and prepare files for print production.

Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator or similar graphic design software.

Strong attention to detail and commitment to print and production quality.

Mechanical and technical aptitude with the ability to learn new equipment and software.

Ability to troubleshoot production issues and identify practical solutions.

Strong organizational and communication skills.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a small team.

Dependable attendance and reliable transportation.

Willingness and ability to learn multiple production roles, processes, and technologies. Preferred Experience operating wide format roll-to-roll printers.

Experience operating flatbed UV printers.

Digital equipment operating experience.

Experience with RIP software.

Experience with nesting software and material optimization.

Experience operating plotters/cutting equipment.

Experience operating laminators and other print-finishing equipment.

Graphic design or production art experience. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong technical aptitude and problem-solving skills.

Ability to move comfortably between software, equipment operation, and finishing processes.

Ability to prioritize multiple production jobs and adjust to changing deadlines.

Strong quality-control mindset.

Ability to identify and implement more efficient production methods.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to contribute positively within a small-team environment. Physical Requirements The position may require prolonged standing; frequent movement throughout the production area; bending, reaching, and lifting; handling rolls, substrates, printed materials, and finished products; and safely operating production and finishing equipment. Specific lifting requirements should be established based on the materials and equipment used by the organization. Must be able to routinely lift/carry up to 80 pounds. Success in This Role A successful Wide Format Operator produces accurate, high-quality work while keeping production moving efficiently. They anticipate problems before they become costly errors, use materials and equipment thoughtfully, communicate well with the team, and continually look for opportunities to improve their skills and the overall production process.
