Job Description

Job Summary:
As a union shop with full benefits, we are looking for a dependable and safety-focused Furnace Tender to join our metal casting team. Furnace Tenders are responsible for operating our induction furnaces to safely melt steel, pig iron and other elements for gray and ductile iron production. This position requires attention to detail and a strong commitment to workplace safety.
Key Responsibilities:
 Safely operate induction furnace control panels and furnace hydraulics, pyrometers, electric scales, and other related equipment to produce various grades of gray and ductile iron.  Monitor furnace metal temperatures using infrared pyrometers.  Safely monitor molten metal chemistries via manual sample collection and test cup loading and operation of computerized Meltlab to ensure iron quality.  Track iron production and coordinate with molding department to ensure adequate iron production.  Follow detailed instructions, specifications, and safety procedures for each furnace charge.  Manually remove slag and other impurities from molten metal before pouring.  Assist in the setup and maintenance of Melt Department equipment.  Inspect equipment, identify and report defects, equipment issues, or safety hazards immediately.  Wear and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE).  Maintain a clean and organized work area.  Work closely with foundry team members to ensure efficient and timely production.  Assist with Furnace re-lining procedures.  Patch Ladles and assist with iron pouring duties and scrap sorting if the Melt Department is shorthanded.  Safely operate forklifts, Bobcats, bandsaws, hoists and other relevant equipment.  Monitor and communicate raw material supplies to ensure timely re-ordering.
Qualifications:
 High school diploma or GED preferred.  Previous experience in a foundry or metal casting environment is a plus.  Basic knowledge of foundry operations and safety procedures.  Ability to work in high temperature and loud environments.  Must be physically fit: able to lift 50+ lbs., stand for long periods, and perform repetitive tasks.  Willingness to follow all safety rules and company policies.  Team-oriented with good communication skills.  Ability to maintain high activity & high-quality work while keeping a safe environment.  Willingness to maintain facial hair as appropriate for respirator use during furnace re-line procedures (one or two shifts/month).  Prepared to ensure reliable work attendance.
