Position Overview The Large Boring Mill Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining horizontal and/or vertical boring mills to machine large metal components to precise specifications. This is a safety‑sensitive role requiring strong technical skill, situational awareness, and the ability to work with heavy equipment, rotating machinery, and overhead material‑handling systems. What You'll Do Machine Operation Operate CNC large boring mills to machine oversized workpieces, castings, and tooling components. Load, secure, and align parts using overhead cranes, slings, chains, and precision measurement tools. Monitor cutting conditions, tool wear, coolant flow, and machine performance throughout the machining cycle. Adjust feeds, speeds, offsets, and tool paths to maintain dimensional accuracy and prevent equipment damage. Setup & Programming Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, and machining instructions. Set up tooling, fixtures, boring bars, and other devices appropriate for large‑format machining. Input, edit, and verify CNC programs at the machine control (if CNC‑equipped). Perform test cuts and verify part dimensions using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height gauges, and dial indicators. Safety & Compliance Maintain constant situational awareness around rotating equipment, suspended loads, and pinch points. Follow all PPE requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, crane safety protocols, and machine guarding rules. Immediately respond to alarms, abnormal machine sounds, vibration changes, or unexpected tool behavior. Report hazards, near misses, equipment issues, or unsafe conditions promptly. Quality Control Inspect machined parts to ensure compliance with tolerances, surface finish requirements, and dimensional specifications. Document measurements, deviations, and corrective actions. Identify defects or machining issues and communicate with engineering or supervision for resolution. Maintenance & Housekeeping Perform routine maintenance such as lubrication, coolant checks, chip removal, and tool replacement. Keep work area clean, organized, and free of debris or obstructions. Assist maintenance personnel with troubleshooting machine issues when needed. Communication & Documentation Maintain accurate production records, setup sheets, and inspection logs. Communicate effectively with supervisors, engineers, crane operators, and fellow machinists. Participate in daily shift meetings, safety briefings, and process improvement discussions. Qualifications Experience operating large horizontal or vertical boring mills (CNC or manual). Ability to read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, and machining instructions. Proficiency with precision measurement tools and inspection methods. Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of machining principles. Ability to operate overhead cranes and rigging equipment safely (training provided if needed). Basic math skills, including fractions, decimals, and tolerance calculations. Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Physical & Environmental Requirements Stand, walk, and perform machining tasks for extended periods (8-12 hours depending on shift). Lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs regularly; heavier loads handled with mechanical assistance. Bend, stoop, reach, climb onto machine platforms, and maneuver around large equipment. Tolerate exposure to noise, vibration, cutting fluids, heat, and industrial manufacturing conditions. Use hands and arms for precise movements, measurement tasks, and tool handling. Work Environment Heavy manufacturing environment with large rotating machinery, overhead cranes, and moving equipment. Exposure to metal chips, lubricants, coolants, and airborne particulates.
