POSITION SUMMARY
The Bindery Operator sets up, operates, and maintains bindery and finishing equipment to produce high-quality printed materials that meet customer specifications and Salem One standards. This role serves as a technical lead on shift by supporting workflow execution, mentoring operators/helpers, and ensuring consistent safety, quality, and productivity.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Set up, operate, and monitor bindery/finishing equipment (e.g., folders, cutters, stitchers, perfect binders) to meet job requirements. Review job tickets, specifications, and samples; perform in-process quality checks to verify trim, fold, bind, and finishing requirements. Troubleshoot production issues and adjust machine settings and materials to maintain quality, productivity, and on-time completion. Coordinate work priorities with the Bindery Supervisor; communicate status, constraints, and material needs to support schedule commitments. Complete routine maintenance, cleaning, and troubleshooting; document issues and coordinate repairs with Maintenance to minimize downtime. Train and assist operators/helpers on safe equipment operation, standard work, and quality expectations; reinforce 5S and safe practices.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification in print/graphics or related field preferred. 3+ years of experience in bindery operations or print finishing; ability to operate multiple finishing machines. Strong mechanical aptitude with demonstrated troubleshooting skills and comfort performing routine maintenance. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality; ability to interpret job tickets, measurements, and specifications. Ability to work independently and lead by example in a fast-paced production environment. Effective communication skills and ability to train/coach others; reliable attendance and teamwork mindset.
