A Production Plant Manager directs work and resources needed for a manufacturing production process. Plans and manages production work that meets cost, quality and quantity specifications for a company or project.
The Plant Manager is responsible for the overall operation and performance of the precast concrete manufacturing facility. This position provides leadership and direction to production, quality control, maintenance, shipping, and plant personnel to ensure that products are manufactured safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in accordance with company and customer requirements. This position has full authority over the production floor and is directly responsible for meeting project deadlines and ensuring a quality product is produced. Minimum experience as assistant plant manager or higher in the precast industry is required. The Plant Manager is responsible for maintaining a safe and productive work environment while controlling labor, material, equipment, and operating costs. The position requires strong leadership, organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, as well as a working knowledge of precast concrete manufacturing. Essential Responsibilities1. Production Management Direct and oversee daily precast concrete production activities. Develop and maintain production schedules based on customer orders, required delivery dates, manpower, equipment, and production capacity. Ensure production targets are met while maintaining required quality standards. Monitor production rates, labor hours, material usage, scrap, rework, and overall plant efficiency. Identify production bottlenecks and implement corrective actions. Coordinate production activities with the sales, project management, quality control, and shipping departments. 2. Employee Management Supervise, train, and provide direction to plant employees. Establish clear expectations for employee performance, attendance, productivity, workmanship, and safety. Conduct or assist with employee hiring, training, performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, and termination decisions. Maintain appropriate staffing levels based on production requirements. Address employee conflicts and performance issues promptly and appropriately. Maintain accurate records relating to employee attendance, training, disciplinary actions, and certifications. 3. Quality Control Work closely with the Quality Control Manager to ensure products meet company, customer, engineering, and applicable industry requirements. Ensure production employees follow approved manufacturing procedures and quality standards. Investigate production and quality problems and implement corrective actions. Work with engineering and quality control to resolve manufacturing issues and improve product quality. 4. Safety Maintain overall responsibility for plant safety and safe work practices. Ensure employees follow company safety policies and OSHA requirements. Identify unsafe conditions and ensure corrective actions are implemented promptly. Ensure employees properly use required personal protective equipment. Monitor safe operation of forklifts, cranes, overhead lifting equipment, trucks, and other plant equipment. Investigate workplace accidents and near misses and implement corrective measures. Lead by example and maintain a zero-tolerance approach toward intentional violations of critical safety procedures. 5. Equipment and Maintenance Oversee the maintenance and condition of production equipment, molds, forms, forklifts, cranes, batch plant equipment, and other plant machinery. Establish and maintain preventive-maintenance programs. Maintain records of equipment maintenance and repair. Monitor equipment condition and make recommendations regarding repair, replacement, or capital expenditures. 6. Materials and Inventory Monitor inventory levels of raw materials and other production materials. Coordinate material purchasing requirements with management and purchasing personnel. Minimize material waste, shortages, and unnecessary inventory. Ensure materials are properly stored and protected from damage or contamination. Investigate excessive material usage and implement corrective actions. 7. Shipping and Yard Operations Coordinate finished-product storage and organization within the plant yard. Work with the shipping department to ensure products are available and loaded according to delivery schedules. Ensure products are properly handled to prevent damage. Coordinate loading activities involving forklifts, cranes, and other material-handling equipment. Maintain an organized and safe plant yard. Assist with resolving delivery, loading, and product-handling issues. 8. Cost Control Monitor plant labor costs, overtime, material usage, scrap, rework, equipment expenses, and other operating costs. Establish productivity expectations and monitor actual performance against those expectations. Monitor labor hours by production activity. Make recommendations for process improvements and capital expenditures. 9. Production Reporting and Accountability Maintain accurate daily production records and interface with Titan. Track quantities produced, labor hours, rejected products, rework, material usage, and production downtime. Review production performance with management on a regular basis. 10. Continuous Improvement Identify opportunities to improve manufacturing processes, employee productivity, product quality, and plant efficiency. Implement standardized production procedures where appropriate. Reduce unnecessary handling, movement, waiting time, rework, and material waste. Work with management to implement new equipment, processes, technology, and production methods. Continually evaluate plant layout and workflow to improve efficiency. Qualifications Required Previous management or supervisory experience in a precast plant. Strong leadership and employee-management skills. Ability to manage multiple production priorities simultaneously. Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities. Ability to read and understand production drawings and specifications. Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Strong communication skills. Ability to enforce company policies and hold employees accountable. Experience Experience in precast concrete manufacturing required. Experience with Titan Precast Management software preferred but not required. Knowledge of concrete mixes, reinforcing steel, forms, lifting inserts, and precast manufacturing processes. Experience with driving operational efficiency to maximize output and quality. Identifying bottleneck points in production and alleviating them. Knowledge of OSHA regulations and industrial safety practices. PCI, NPCA, ACI, or related industry experience/certifications. The Plant Manager is accountable for identifying problems before they become significant issues, communicating problems to ownership/management, and implementing appropriate corrective actions. The Plant Manager is expected to lead by example, maintain high standards of safety and quality, and hold all plant personnel accountable for meeting established schedules and company expectations.
