Job Overview The Lead is responsible for supporting safe, efficient, and high-quality production of an assigned area during the assigned shift. This role serves as a working lead by operating and monitoring production equipment, coordinating workflow, assisting team members, supporting training, maintaining production standards, and helping ensure proper communication between operators, general laborers, maintenance, quality, shipping/receiving, and supervision. The Lead provides day-to-day guidance and support to production employees over an assigned area but does not have full supervisory responsibility. The Lead may help direct work, support shift priorities, assist with troubleshooting, document production activity, and communicate performance or employee concerns to higher level roles such as (but not limited to): Shift Supervisor/Manager or Plant Manager. Key Responsibilities Leadership Serve as a working lead on the production floor to support safe, efficient, and consistent production operations Support the Shift Supervisor in communicating daily production priorities, quality expectations, safety requirements, and work assignments Help train and support employees on safe work practices, standard operating procedures, quality checks, housekeeping expectations, and proper equipment operation Promote safe work behaviors, proper PPE use, lockout/tagout compliance, machine guarding requirements, and adherence to company safety procedures Support continuous improvement efforts, including 5S, waste reduction, efficiency improvements, and problem-solving activities Help promote teamwork, accountability, respect, and a positive work environment Escalate employee concerns, attendance issues, performance concerns, safety issues, or policy violations to the Shift Supervisor; this role is not responsible for formal disciplinary action unless specifically authorized Technical Support & Training This role should be cross-trained sufficiently to be able to function temporarily in the following roles: General Laborer, Production Equipment Operator, and/or Powered Industrial Truck Operator Operate, monitor, and adjust production equipment as needed to maintain steady production flow Assist Production Equipment Operators and general laborers with equipment operation, material flow, packaging, palletizing, housekeeping, and production support activities Monitor production output, equipment performance, product quality, material usage, downtime, and workflow throughout the shift Assist with troubleshooting basic operational problems, clearing jams or blockages safely, and making routine process adjustments within training and authorization Support quality control activities, including routine checks for bag weight, product appearance, labeling, lot/date codes, density/loft, fiber consistency, moisture, additive rates, and other required production standards Help ensure nonconforming product is identified, segregated, documented, and reported according to plant procedures Assist with start-up, shutdown, changeovers, and shift handoff activities Maintain accurate production documentation, including throughput, downtime reasons, quality checks, maintenance issues, material usage, and shift notes Support housekeeping and sanitation expectations to reduce dust accumulation, prevent slip/trip hazards, and maintain an organized work area Fill in for Production Equipment Operator or general production duties as needed to maintain production flow and meet shift goals May be required to fill in as a Powered Industrial Truck Operator, including safely operating forklifts, loaders, or other mobile equipment, if trained, certified, and authorized When filling in as a Powered Industrial Truck Operator, safely move raw materials, finished goods, pallets, supplies, and waste materials in accordance with plant safety rules, traffic guidelines, and equipment procedures Conduct required pre-use inspections of assigned equipment and report maintenance or safety concerns Collaboration & Communication Identify and communicate production issues, quality concerns, material shortages, equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or staffing needs to the Shift Supervisor Communicate effectively with maintenance, quality, shipping/receiving, PIT operators, supervisors, and other production team members to maintain production flow Required Skills & Abilities Strong safety mindset and commitment to following company procedures Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot basic equipment or process issues Ability to lead by example and provide day-to-day guidance to team members Effective communication skills with operators, laborers, supervisors, maintenance, quality, shipping/receiving, and other departments Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality standards Ability to support training, coaching, and teamwork in a production environment Good organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities during the shift Basic computer, documentation, and record-keeping skills Ability to read gauges, control panels, production documentation, labels, lot/date codes, and basic process information Ability to work independently and as part of a team Ability to remain calm and productive under pressure Strong attendance, reliability, initiative, and work ethic When assigned PIT duties, strong situational awareness, hand-eye coordination, depth perception, and ability to judge load size, balance, and equipment stability Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent required Manufacturing, industrial, warehouse, or production experience required; cellulose, pulp, paper, chemical processing, or similar manufacturing experience preferred Prior experience as a Production Equipment Operator or similar role preferred Prior lead experience, informal leadership experience, or demonstrated ability to train and support others preferred Experience operating production equipment, bagging systems, palletizing equipment, or related manufacturing machinery preferred Ability to successfully complete required company training for production equipment and safety procedures Ability to successfully complete Powered Industrial Truck certification if assigned PIT responsibilities Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, extended hours, and overtime as required Physical Requirements Ability to work 40+ hours per week, including weekends when necessary Ability to stand and walk for extended periods Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform repetitive motions Ability to climb stairs and ladders, squat, kneel, bend, reach, and work in awkward positions as required Must be physically able to work in unconditioned and uncomfortable industrial environments Comfortable working in areas with noise, heat, dust, steam, chemicals, mobile equipment, and production machinery Ability to wear required PPE for extended periods
