Job Description

Dimensional and Visual Inspection | Casting Layout Taunton, MA | Full-time, on-site D.W. Clark casts engineered components for critical infrastructure and defense. Our mission is to advance how castings are made and the systems they make possible: the submarines that defend the nation, the infrastructure that runs everyday life, and the technologies changing how the world moves. We are building the most capable, technology-forward casting operation, as part of proving American manufacturing can lead again. We pour centrifugal and static castings with both fixed and 3D printed tooling in steels, stainless, nickel, cobalt, and specialty alloys, supported by in-house built tailored operating software. We are adding a Dimensional Inspector to our team. Working with conventional measuring tools and 3D scanning, the role sets castings up on surface plates, establishes datums, verifies as-cast dimensions, and performs visual inspection of casting surfaces against drawing and specification acceptance criteria. The role also inspects and overchecks finish machined components. The right candidate reads a drawing fluently, trusts nothing until it is measured, and takes pride in an inspection report a customer never questions. Key Responsibilities Casting layout and dimensional inspection Lay out castings on surface plates: establish datums and target points per the drawing, mark out machine stock and key features, and verify as-cast dimensions for first article, in-process, and final inspection Measure with conventional tools: height gages, calipers, micrometers, indicators, protractors, tapes, templates, and fixed gages Verify sufficient stock exists on machined surfaces and flag undersize or mislocated conditions before castings advance to machining Apply GD&T fundamentals when checking features against the drawing 3D scanning Capture 3D scans of castings, align scan data to the CAD model, and produce deviation color maps and dimensional reports Use scan results to support layout decisions, first article reports, and disposition of borderline conditions Visual inspection Perform visual inspection of casting surfaces against drawing, specification, and customer acceptance criteria; identify, mark, and document surface indications Route nonconforming conditions into the quality system with clear photos, locations, and measurements so disposition decisions are fast Machined part inspection Inspect basic finish machined features: diameters, depths, locations, flatness, and threads, using micrometers, bore gages, thread gages, digital height gauges, indicators, and surface plates Documentation and measurement equipment Record inspection results accurately and completely; produce dimensional inspection reports that feed customer certification packages, maintaining heat and cast identification throughout Handle, store, and care for measurement equipment properly and use only gages with current calibration status Calibrate and log calibration status for internally calibrated equipment Qualifications Experience in dimensional inspection in a casting operation, machining, fabrication, or metals manufacturing environment Skilled with surface plate work and conventional measuring tools; able to set up a part, establish datums, and work through a drawing methodically Reads and interprets 2D drawings, specifications, and quality requirements fluently; working knowledge of GD&T fundamentals Experience with 3D scanning or a demonstrated aptitude to learn it; we will train the right candidate on our equipment Strong attention to detail and a habit of checking the work; honest about what was measured and what was not Comfortable recording results in inspection software and business systems, or quick to learn Able to work safely around castings, lifting equipment, and an active shop floor High school diploma or equivalent minimum required; quality or inspection certification is a plus This position requires access to information that, under U.S. Government and customer contract requirements, may be accessed only by U.S. citizens. U.S. citizenship is therefore required. What We Offer This is a full-time, hourly (non-exempt) position; overtime is paid at time and a half.
