We're looking for someone early in their journalism career who understands news value, thrives under deadline, and is eager to grow within a newsroom investing in its future across print, digital, and eNewspaper platforms. If you care about how stories are presented, how readers experience the news and how design can elevate journalism, this role could be a great fit for you.
Essential Functions Design with purpose:
Create compelling, reader-first layouts for news, enterprise and sports that clearly prioritize the most important stories of the day.
Be part of the newsroom:
Collaborate directly with editors and reporters to shape daily coverage.
Own the daily report:
Help drive the visual execution of the print newspaper and eNewspaper, ensuring strong lineup flow, clean presentation and consistency across platforms. Work fast — and smart: Balance speed with precision on nightly deadlines, making real-time adjustments as news develops and priorities shift.
Elevate the details:
Write and refine headlines, improve display type, catch errors and strengthen overall readability under pressure. Operate in a modern production environment: Use industry tools including Adobe Creative Suite and Protecmedia's AI-driven editorial system to design pages and improve workflow efficiency. Education and Experience Requirements A journalist's instincts — strong news judgment is essential Some newsroom or editorial design experience Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator is helpful Ability to learn new systems quickly, including AI-driven tools Confidence working on deadline with rapidly changing priorities Sharp editing and headline-writing skills Understanding of AP style and print production workflows A collaborative mindset with the ability to take and apply feedback quickly Flexibility to work nights and weekends
Salary Range:
$55,000 - $65,000 Individual compensation may vary from the target range based on several factors including experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
