Structural Steel Fabrication Position Summary We are seeking an experienced Quality Control Inspector to perform daily in-process inspections of structural steel fabrication and welding operations. This position will work directly with fabrication personnel, welders, supervisors, and management to verify that fabricated members conform to approved drawings, specifications, welding requirements, and company quality procedures. The ideal candidate will have hands-on structural steel fabrication experience and the ability to identify fabrication and welding problems before they become costly rework or field issues. Strong structural-steel fabrication and welding knowledge is highly valued. Primary Responsibilities Perform daily in-process inspections of structural steel fabrication. Inspect fit-up, dimensions, orientation, member identification, connections, holes, weld preparations, and other fabrication requirements. Perform visual inspection of completed welds for compliance with applicable requirements. Verify weld size, length, location, profile, and workmanship. Identify weld discontinuities such as undercut, porosity, overlap, cracks, excessive reinforcement, and other unacceptable conditions. Verify fabrication against approved shop drawings, details, and applicable project requirements. Identify errors before material proceeds to the next operation. Document inspection results electronically using an iPad. Maintain accurate QC inspection records and supporting documentation. Initiate and document nonconformances when requirements are not met. Assist with determining the disposition and corrective action for nonconforming work. Perform re-inspections following corrective action or rework. Communicate quality issues directly with shop personnel and supervisors. Monitor recurring quality problems and communicate trends to management. Assist with maintaining documentation required by the company's AISC Quality Management System. Maintain inspection records in an organized and traceable manner. Coordinate with third-party inspectors and testing agencies when required. Perform other QC duties as assigned. Qualifications Required Previous experience in structural steel fabrication. Ability to read and understand structural steel shop drawings. Strong knowledge of welding and fabrication practices. Ability to identify dimensional, fit-up, and welding problems. Ability to communicate effectively with shop personnel. Basic computer/tablet skills. Ability to maintain accurate inspection records. Ability to work independently and make sound inspection decisions. Preferred Previous structural steel QC inspection experience. Knowledge of
AWS D1.1.
Knowledge of AISC requirements and structural steel fabrication practices. Experience working within an AISC-certified fabrication facility. Experience with digital QC documentation. Experience with nonconformance reporting and corrective actions. Work Environment This is a hands-on position in an active structural steel fabrication facility. The inspector will spend significant time on the shop floor and must be comfortable working around welding, fabrication equipment, cranes, material handling, and other industrial operations. What We Are Looking For The successful candidate should be able to recognize a problem before it leaves the shop, communicate the problem professionally, document it accurately, and follow it through to correction and verification. Strong practical fabrication knowledge is more important than simply having inspection credentials. A candidate who understands how steel is actually fabricated, fit, welded, measured, and corrected will be strongly considered.
Pay:
$25.00 - $30.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week
