Role Overview This position involves managing all quality assurance and control operations across our coil coating plants, with a focus on meeting ISO 9001, ASTM, and client requirements. You will be tasked with safeguarding the quality of our aluminum products by utilizing statistical process controls, conducting failure analysis, performing root cause investigations, and executing corrective action strategies. Core Responsibilities Quality Assurance & Compliance Design and manage a Quality Management System (QMS) that aligns with ISO 9001, ASTM, and other relevant industry benchmarks. Help maintain a safe and compliant working environment by ensuring adherence to EPA environmental regulations, OSHA standards, and specific customer requirements. Keep all quality-related documentation, including SOPs, inspection criteria, and work instructions, up to date. Manage both internal and external audit processes to guarantee that all quality protocols satisfy customer expectations. Process Control & Defect Prevention Utilize Statistical Process Control (SPC) to track process consistency and identify potential issues before they result in defects. Perform Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to evaluate process risks and implement proactive preventive measures. Apply Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) methodologies to minimize process variation. Quality Control & Product Testing Supervise laboratory evaluations of substrates, coatings, and final products to verify compliance with: Coating thickness, adhesion (crosshatch/tape tests), gloss, hardness (Pencil Test), and solvent resistance (MEK rub test). Color matching via spectrophotometry. Bend, flexibility, and impact resistance (T-bend, mandrel, impact tests). Corrosion resistance (salt spray, humidity testing, cyclic exposure testing per
ASTM B117
). Film weight measurements and cure temperature verification using IR sensors and temperature profiling tools. Customer Complaints & Corrective Actions Act as the main point of contact for customer inquiries, claim investigations, and the resolution of nonconforming materials. Drive Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and generate Supplier Corrective Action Reports (SCARs) to address raw material quality issues. Utilize the 8D problem-solving framework to ensure that containment, corrective, and preventive measures are successfully executed. Supplier Quality Management Create and administer Supplier Quality Assurance (SQA) initiatives to verify that incoming materials meet our standards. Perform supplier audits to confirm the consistency of aluminum alloys, coating performance, and substrate cleanliness. Partner with the Purchasing department to ensure that only authorized vendors provide our raw materials and chemical coatings. Help improve supply chain efficiency by establishing dock-to-stock programs for reliable materials. Continuous Improvement & Lean Initiatives Promote Kaizen, 5S, and other improvement projects to help the team reduce scrap, rework, and operational downtime. Collaborate with Production and Maintenance to refine oven curing profiles, coating parameters, and tension leveling settings. Provide training to technicians and operators on effective inspection methods, defect identification, and industry best practices. Lead initiatives aimed at increasing first-pass yield (FPY) and reducing material waste to improve overall process efficiency. Working Conditions The role requires a balance of office/lab work and time on the production floor to engage directly with coating processes. Staff must wear appropriate PPE, such as safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection, due to potential exposure to chemicals, solvents, high heat, and machinery. Candidates must be available to provide support for off-shift troubleshooting and urgent quality concerns as needed.
