A Tool and Die Maker builds the tools and dies used to make a variety of products and appliances. Works with mechanical engineers to build and assemble parts according to blueprints.
Overview Opportunity to join a leading Aerospace Manufacturer as a Tooling Specialist. This position is a contract to hire opportunity with our client in Santa Ana, CA on 1st shift. In this role you will plan and determine the sequence of operations, layouts, and construction of various types and sizes of tools, fixtures and dies as required to support production needs.
Responsibilities:
Performs all tooling/fixtures inspection per related documents. Generates reports to record result of tooling/fixtures inspection. Monitors recall and sets up a schedule to verify accuracy of the tooling/fixtures, as required. Maintains all records reflecting tooling/fixtures inspection activity. Coordinates all inspection scheduling with Manufacturing and/or Engineering/ Calibration. Schedules inspection for CMM functions. Identifies the specific department/location where tooling/fixtures are being used or stored. Analyzes complex blueprints, sketches and/or verbal instruction to determine layout, fabrication and assembly. Manufactures new or alters existing tooling. Reviews quality of work and verifies dimensions and alignments. Coordinates with Engineering to clarify and define problems before troubleshooting, repairing, producing or altering a tool. Establishes tooling reference points. Corrects tool drawings by red lining or prepares sketches of corrections. Completes Operator Acceptance Program (OAP) certification, as required. May drive company vehicle or forklift Performs other duties, tasks and responsibilities as assigned. Requirements Requires 5-6 years toolmaking experience in a toolmaking discipline, preferably in an aerospace manufacturing environment. Must be knowledgeable of tool room practices and procedures. Must be able to work with all ferrous and non-ferrous metals and their alloys: stainless steel, tool steels, L-C steel, aluminum, copper, brass, bronze and all teflons and plastics possessing a strong knowledge of tool steels, steels and their properties and the heat treating of steels. Must be proficient at shop math and trigonometry and at the set up and operation of lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, jig bore, hones, drill presses, pedestal grinders, optical measuring equipment and power saws. Must have own set of tools. Must be able to understand and analyze the working of machinery, be able to read and understand written planning, complex blueprints and follow verbal instructions.
