Job Description
Position Summary:
The Tool Room Technician supports the manufacturing of wire shelving and related products by designing, building, and maintaining jigs, fixtures, and forming tools. This role focuses on practical, shop-floor solutions using primarily manual equipment and legacy machinery to support new part development and ongoing production.Key Responsibilities:
Design and build jigs, fixtures, and forming tools for new wire shelf products and components Work closely with production to develop tooling that supports bending, welding, and assembly operations Modify and repair existing tooling to improve part quality, consistency, and throughput Set up and operate manual machines (bridgeport mills, engine lathes, drill presses, surface grinders, etc.) Create simple layouts, sketches, or templates (often without full CAD support) to execute tooling builds Assist in troubleshooting production issues related to wire forming, spacing, alignment, and weld fit-up Maintain and refurbish older tooling and fixtures used on legacy equipment Ensure tooling is durable, repeatable, and easy for operators to use on older machines Perform basic grinding, and fitting as needed for tooling components Keep tool room organized and maintain inventory of tooling materials and spare componentsRequired Qualifications:
5+ years of tool room, machining, or wire/forming fixture experience Strong hands-on experience with manual machining equipment (no CNC required, but helpful) Ability to read blueprints and work from limited or incomplete drawings Experience building fixtures for welding, bending, or assembly processes Solid understanding of tolerances and how they affect fit and function in a production environment Mechanical aptitude and ability to problem-solve with practical, cost-effective solutionsPreferred Qualifications:
Experience in wire forming, metal fabrication, or similar manufacturing Familiarity with resistance welding fixtures or assembly jigs Basic CAD skills (for simple layouts, not required) Welding and fabrication experience (MIG/TIG preferred)Key Skills:
Strong "old-school" machining and fabrication skills Ability to work independently with minimal direction Creativity in designing simple, rugged tooling solutions Troubleshooting and continuous improvement mindset Good communication with production operators and supervisorsWork Environment:
Industrial manufacturing environment with legacy equipment (1970s-era machines and tooling) Hands-on role requiring standing, lifting, and frequent machine operation Exposure to metal dust, oils, welding processes, and moderate noise levelsPay:
