A Water Treatment Specialist or Waste Water Operator operates and monitors equipment in facilities that treat wastewater. Monitors treatment processes so that water is cleaned to meet public health and environmental standards and is safe for drinking or releasing into the environment.

Under limited supervision, performs skilled mechanical and operational craftwork at the journeyman level in the operation, maintenance, installation, repair, and troubleshooting of wastewater process equipment and components of wastewater treatment plants. Work assignments are subject to established procedures, practices, or well-defined policies and are reviewed, usually after the fact, in terms of quality, timeliness, and adherence to methods, standards, and policies. Work requires knowledge of equipment operation, maintenance, regulations, policies, methods, standards, and procedures governing operation and maintenance of wastewater process equipment. Work is performed following established methods, practices, and procedures which are substantially diversified and some latitude is permitted to consider and choose the most appropriate method, technique or procedure to follow. Solves complex problems within established parameters and identifies and recommends responses to new and unusual circumstances. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, where there are some risks and hazards. May act as lead on jobs and train other workers. Contacts require courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others to request or provide information, ask questions or obtain clarification. Employees in this class may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays and rotating shift. Operates, maintains, installs, repairs, and troubleshoots process equipment. Monitors and inspects equipment to verify proper operation, identify problems and take corrective action where needed. Operates personal computers to input data and statistics for operational and regulatory reports. Utilizes computer programs related to the maintenance, operation and communication functions. Ensures permit conditions are met. Provides plant operational support to the process coordinator. Maintains, installs, repairs, and troubleshoots mechanical equipment. Operates and maintains equipment such as grinders, lathes, drill presses, pipe threading and welding machines, band saws, electrical testing equipment and other associated shop equipment. Maintains equipment maintenance records and reports. Performs preventive maintenance on all equipment. Maintains and inventories tools. Performs minor electrical maintenance functions. Operates and maintains vehicle in accordance with company procedures and policies.
Operates heavy equipment such as:
¾ ton trucks, boom trucks, tractors, and other vehicles that may require up to a Class "A" CDL License. Cleans and maintains process equipment. May train and lead the work of others. Performs other work-related tasks as required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS OPEN REQUIREMENTS
: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years journeyman level experience in the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of process equipment of the type used in wastewater/reuse pumping and treatment facilities.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION
: A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class. A valid Class "A" commercial driver's license may be required depending upon assignment and if required must be maintained during employment in this classification. A valid American Welding Society Structural Welding Certificate may be required upon assignment and if required must be maintained during employment in this class. A valid Class "C" Florida Wastewater Plant Operator License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class. The starting pay for this position is $44.17.

The starting salary for professional positions will be determined based on education, licenses, certifications, skills, experience, and alignment with salaries for similar roles within the organization.
