A Water Treatment Specialist or Waste Water Operator operates and monitors equipment in facilities that treat wastewater. Monitors treatment processes so that water is cleaned to meet public health and environmental standards and is safe for drinking or releasing into the environment.
Under general supervision, performs skilled technical work in the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of the City's wastewater treatment facilities. Ensures compliance with applicable state and federal regulations to protect public health and the environment. Work is performed in accordance with TCEQ permits, operational manuals, and safety standards. Reports to the Wastewater Foreman.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
High school diploma or GED required.
Experience:
Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses/Certifications:
Valid TCEQ Class "C" Wastewater Operator License required or ability to obtain within two (2) yearsTCEQ Class "B" Wastewater Operator License preferredValid Texas Commercial Driver's License required or ability to obtain within three (3) months
Essential Job Functions:
Operates and monitors wastewater treatment equipment including pumps, motors, clarifiers, grit collectors, filters, belt press, flow meters, and chemical feed systemsPerforms process control testing, compliance sampling, and routine laboratory analysisConducts preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment and facilities, including confined-space activitiesMaintains accurate operational, laboratory, chemical, maintenance, and regulatory recordsPerforms housekeeping, groundskeeping, and facility security tasksUtilizes SCADA systems and computer software to monitor plant operations and document activitiesMaintains required certifications and complies with all safety and regulatory requirementsInteracts professionally with supervisors, operators, technicians, vendors, law enforcement, and the publicOperates vehicles, tools, and equipment necessary for plant operations and maintenancePerforms other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Work is performed primarily in an industrial wastewater treatment environment with exposure to noise, chemicals, weather conditions, and mechanical equipment. Position requires standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, bending, kneeling, reaching, and working in confined spaces. Employee must be able to lift up to 80 pounds from floor to knuckle height and carry up to 15 feet; occasionally lift or carry up to 100 pounds; frequently lift or carry up to 20 pounds; and constantly lift or carry up to 10 pounds. Position requires pushing and pulling forces up to 20 pounds. Use of personal protective equipment is required.
