A Water Treatment Specialist or Waste Water Operator operates and monitors equipment in facilities that treat wastewater. Monitors treatment processes so that water is cleaned to meet public health and environmental standards and is safe for drinking or releasing into the environment.

Essential Function Statements:
Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Appointed by the Public Works Director and City Manager. Under the general supervision and direction of the Public Works Director and or other designated supervisor, performs skilled and semi-skilled work about the operation, maintenance and construction of the City's water, wastewater and drainage systems. The individual does not supervise other employees.
Essential Functions/Duties:
Maintains and operates the City's water and wastewater plants; Maintains, constructs, and installs main lines, service lines, fire hydrants, meters, valves, etc.; Operates and maintains various types of heavy, light, and complex equipment used in the maintenance and construction of water and wastewater systems (backhoes, sewer cleaners, mowers, and hand tools); Repairs and installs surface features damaged during system maintenance, including landscaping, sprinklers, asphalt, concrete, etc.; Maintains and operates various water treatment facilities including painting, mowing, trimming, cleaning of drying beds etc.; Responds to customer inquiries, requests and complaints regarding maintenance, leaks and other related items in a courteous and professional manner; Coordinates maintenance with hired temporaries; Completes work orders and various other records about work activities.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent education required.
Experience:
Three years' experience in equipment operation, waterline or pipe construction or closely related area. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment such as backhoes, tractors and mowers helpful.
License, or Certificates:
Must possess a valid Texas Driver's license at the time of hire; ability to obtain a Class "D" water and wastewater operator's license within one year of employment.
Knowledge of:
Tools, machines and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and construction of drinking water and wastewater systems; principles of maintenance and construction of water-related projects; OSHA safety standards and local, state and federal regulations.
Responsibility for:
Moderate responsibility for the care, condition, and use of materials, equipment, money and tools; responsibility for directing other employees and making decisions which affect them including what they will do, when they will do it and how.
Communication skills:
Ability to furnish and obtain information from other departments; contact with other departments. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Tools, Machine, Equipment Operation:
Regular use of telephone, calculator, hand tools, utility trucks, pickup trucks, mowers, backhoes, and sewer cleaners.
Analytical Ability:
Prioritize tasks, establish effective working relationships with employees and the public. Able to perform basic operations with little to no supervision.
Working Conditions:
Regular exposure to unpleasant or hazardous working conditions caused by water, noise, dust, heavy equipment, toxic fumes, traffic, heights, and high voltage equipment; work in trenches, vaults, and manholes; frequent climbing, balancing, stooping, bending and kneeling; occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds; outdoor work in all types of weather; requires on-call status on a rotating basis, staying within reasonable response time and answering a pager; may include seasonal shift work (including weekends and holidays).
