Overview We are seeking a skilled Weld Working Lead to join our steel fabrication team. In addition to MIG welding and assembling steel components according to specifications, this role directs the daily activities of the weld shop, setting run priorities, keeping welders on task, and serving as the point of contact between the weld team and Maintenance, Quality, and Engineering. This role requires precision, attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings. Key Responsibilities Perform MIG welding on steel components and structures. Read and interpret blueprints and welding symbols. Set up welding equipment and adjust settings for material type and thickness. Ensure welded parts meet quality and safety standards. Operate hand and power tools, including grinders and saws. Maintain a clean and safe work environment, following company and OSHA safety regulations. Collaborate with other team members, including fabricators and engineers. Lift and position materials manually or with hoists/cranes as needed. Lead Responsibilities Prioritize and assign the daily run order for the weld shop so welders know what to run next and production stays on schedule. Confirm all welders are clocked in, at their stations, and actively working throughout the shift. Serve as the first point of contact for equipment, material, or process issues in the weld shop, and alert Maintenance, Quality, or Engineering promptly when needed. Communicate daily happenings, open issues, and priorities to the next shift to ensure a smooth handoff. Monitor material and consumable availability (wire, gas, filler metal) and coordinate with material handling or purchasing to prevent downtime. Provide hands-on guidance and training to welders, including new hires, on technique, quality expectations, and safety procedures. Verify welds meet quality and specification requirements before parts move to the next operation, flagging rework or nonconformance to Quality as needed. Reinforce safety protocols and PPE compliance among team members, addressing concerns immediately. Requirements Proven experience as a MIG Welder, preferably in steel fabrication, with demonstrated ability to guide or mentor other welders. Proficiency in welding techniques Ability to read and understand technical drawings and welding procedures. Knowledge of welding safety standards and procedures. Physical strength and stamina to handle heavy materials. Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Certification in welding (AWS or equivalent) is a plus. Strong communication and organizational skills, reliability, and the ability to make sound decisions independently during a shift. Work Environment Workshop or fabrication shop setting. Exposure to heat, sparks, and loud noise. Use of protective equipment such as welding helmets, gloves, and respirators.
