Job Description
Position Overview The Pipe & Tank Fitter is responsible for the layout, fit-up, alignment, mechanical assembly, and prep of structural steel skids, atmospheric tanks, ASME Section VIII Division 1 Code pressure vessels, and process piping systems. This role is crucial in prepping assemblies for code-qualified welders, integrating complex plumbing networks mounting major system equipment, and ensuring strict adherence to mechanical drawings and fabrication tolerances. Core Responsibilities & Work Scope Tank & Pressure Vessel Fit-Up (ASME Section VIII)
Shell & Head Fit-Up:
Layout and assemble rolled shell plates and formed heads (such as SA-516 Grade 70 carbon steel or stainless steel) prior to seam welding.Nozzle & Bung Integration :
Layout, cut, bevel, and fit bungs, nozzles (such as heavy-wall pipe nozzles and studding outlets), elliptical manways, Structural brackets according to drawings and fabrication standards.Internal Components:
Fit up distributor hubs, internal lateral piping, deflection plates, and internal support clips/brackets ensuring tight clearances and proper alignment. Process Piping & Plumbing FabricationMetallic Piping Assembly:
Fit-up and assemble stainless steel process manifolds and piping networks, Conduct joint preparation.Valve & Instrumentation Fit-Up :
Position and mount modulating control valves, check valves, pressure gauges, and transmitters. Ensure straight pipe runs upstream/downstream of flow meters comply with engineering requirements (e.g., 5x diameter upstream and 2x diameter downstream). Skid Fabrication & System IntegrationStructural Skids :
Fit up structural carbon steel and stainless steel equipment skids, forklift pockets, lifting eyes, and customized component stands.Major Equipment Mounting :
Mount, align, and anchor heavy process equipment—including Goulds transfer pumps, bag filter housings, Fusion mixers, painted carbon steel support stands, chemical feed pumps (such as Stenner feed pumps on shop-fabricated 304SS bases), and mini-split heat pump units.Finishing & Safety Details :
Cap all strut ends, smooth/deburr all mounting hardware and exposed metallic surfaces to ensure safe handling, and attach required warning/spec labels to mixing tanks and vessels. Quality Control, Hold Points & Testing PrepTraveler & Drawing Compliance :
Read and follow shop travelers, sign/initial traveler documents at designated fit-up hold points, and initial shop drawings adjacent to completed fit-ups to track quality.User Access & Maintenance Hold Points :
Coordinate with the shop team on real-world layout checks to ensure operability and easy user maintenance access prior to permanently anchoring major equipment. Run spacing simulations, such as checking mixer shaft removal clearances.Testing Preparation :
Assemble testing manifolds and coordinate directly with production leads and the plumbing team to assist in hydrostatic/pneumatic pressure testing and water testing. Materials, Tools & Standards Material SpecificationsPiping/Fittings:
304/316 Stainless Steel, and Carbon Steel.Seals & Gaskets:
Viton, PTFE, EPDM (NSF Certified for media vessels). No adhesive tape on pipe threads. Technical Standards & CodesPressure Vessels:
ASME Section VIII Division 1 Code requirements (alignment, fit-up tolerances, nozzle spacing).Structural Welds:
Alignment prep in compliance withAWS D1.1
structural standards.Joint Preparation:
Edge rounding and bevel prep in strict compliance withASME UG-76
specifications. Tool & Equipment Operation- Proficient with plasma cutters, oxy-acetylene torches, angle grinders, pipe beveling machines, band saws, drills, and standard hand tools.
- Ability to operate forklifts and overhead cranes safely for heavy material handling. Technical Requirements & Qualifications
Blueprint Reading :
Extensive experience reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings, mechanical schematics, P&IDs, and isometric piping diagrams.Fit-Up Experience :
At least 3 years of experience as a pipe or vessel fitter/fabricator in an industrial or ASME code manufacturing environment.Tack Welding Skills :
Basic tack welding capability (MIG/TIG) for holding alignments prior to final welding.- Attention to
Detail :
Deep understanding of dimensional tolerances, flange bolt pattern alignment, and structural levelness.Collaboration :
Strong communication skills to work closely withASME/AWS
Welder teams, Project Engineers, and Quality Control Inspectors.Welding Certification Test :
Must pass a 6G TIG root / Flux core welding test.Pay:
$21.00 - $30.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per weekBenefits:
