Job Title:
Welder Job Description Join a busy industrial fabrication shop as a Welder focused primarily on structural plate work for large industrial furnace assemblies. You will use your flux core and MIG welding experience to fit and weld steel plate and pipe components from blueprints, working closely with experienced fitters to produce high-quality, heavy-duty products. This role is ideal for someone who already has strong core welding and fitting skills, takes pride in consistent attendance, and wants to continue learning advanced techniques in a high-production environment. Responsibilities Perform flux core welding on plate (and some pipe) in a production environment, with an emphasis on structural plate welding. Fit and assemble structural steel plate components by reading and interpreting blueprints, including hand fitting (non-jig) plate in thicknesses up to 3/4 inch. Fabricate parts and assemblies for large industrial furnaces, including both box and occasional cylindrical structures. Use MIG welding processes to join steel components according to specifications and weld symbols. Tack weld and position parts accurately prior to final welding to ensure proper alignment and fit-up. Read and interpret blueprints, including weld symbols, and convert measurements from the metric system to the English system when needed. Fit and thread pipe, and perform fitting work on pipe assemblies as required. Operate hand tools and equipment such as hand saws and cutting torches safely and effectively. Operate overhead cranes to move and position heavy steel components in the shop. Maintain a clean and organized work area, including general cleanup of the shop and facility. Participate in weld testing and blueprint review during the hiring process and follow all quality standards once on the job. Collaborate with experienced fitters to learn and apply more advanced fitting and welding techniques over time. Demonstrate reliable daily attendance and a strong work ethic to support a consistent production schedule. Essential Skills 2-3 years of flux core welding experience on plate or pipe. 2-3 years of fitting experience in a fabrication or job shop environment. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, including weld symbols, and apply them accurately to fitting and welding tasks. Ability to tack weld and position parts correctly based on drawings and specifications. Proven record of reliable, consistent attendance, supported by reference checks. Hands-on experience with MIG welding in a production or fabrication setting. Experience with structural plate fitting, including hand fitting without jigs. Ability to use hand tools such as saws and torches safely and effectively. Ability to operate an overhead crane to move and position steel components. Basic ability to convert dimensions between metric and English measurement systems. Comfort working in a very industrial, non-climate-controlled environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications MIG welding certification preferred but not required if skills and attitude are strong. Experience with TIG welding and stainless steel work is a plus. Previous experience in a job shop or heavy industrial fabrication environment is highly beneficial. Ability and willingness to learn advanced fitting and welding techniques from experienced fitters. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality welds and fits. Ability to follow safety procedures and use personal protective equipment appropriately. No formal education requirements; demonstrated practical welding and blueprint-reading skills are essential. Willingness to complete a weld test and blueprint/weld symbol assessment as part of the interview process. Why Work Here? You will join a long-established company that continues to grow and take on significant new work, including projects coming in from international customers. The shop rewards strong performance with regular raises and offers an additional pay increase upon conversion to permanent employment. You will work alongside experienced fitters who are willing to invest time in teaching you more advanced techniques if you show initiative and long-term potential. This environment suits individuals who value stability, consistent work, and the opportunity to continually develop their skills in real-world industrial projects. Work Environment This role operates in a very industrial, high-production fabrication shop that builds large industrial furnaces, including box and occasional cylindrical structures, using heavy steel plate and pipe. The facility is older and not climate controlled, so temperatures can be very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer, similar to many traditional job shop environments. The shift runs from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with some flexibility required based on workload. You will work around overhead cranes, cutting torches, hand saws, and other heavy fabrication equipment, and you must follow all safety protocols. The dress code includes steel-toe footwear, jeans, and a t-shirt or sweatshirt suitable for a welding and fabrication environment.
