This is a relational, people-facing role at the center of church life: you'll be the person who greets a first-time visitor on Sunday morning, tells the story of our ministries online, and helps newcomers become known, connected, and active members of our congregation. What You Will Do Communications At the heart of any thriving church is a communications ministry that effectively shares the good news of God's love and the ministries of the church within the local community. Sets communications strategy and oversees execution for all church ministries; provides occasional assistance to Preschool and KidZone (after-school) programs. Serves as the in-house webmaster, using WordPress, and maintains accurate, up-to-date, and accessible information for prospective and current members, as well as Preschool and KidZone participants. Coordinates and produces all written and digital newsletters and fliers, including the monthly Cornerstone. Manages the Mailchimp account and distribution lists, and produces the weekly e-blast. Manages church social media platforms and oversees regular, appropriate content. Maintain a Google Drive folder of photos of church activities. Prepares the Charge Conference communications report. Takes creative initiative to communicate the church's ministries and increase visibility within the wider community. Membership & Engagement We are a church that welcomes newcomers on a regular basis. Our Director of Community Life will walk alongside people from their first visit and help them become fully active members of the community. Manages the Planning Center membership database and keeps information current. Monitors attendance pads and records, and communicates visitor information with the pastors for appropriate follow-up. Coordinates bread delivery to first-time worshipers. Organizes New Member classes and programs to help on-board newcomers to the church community. Administers membership records (baptisms, persons received, transfers, losses). Prepares membership reports for the Annual Conference and compiles statistical data for the UMC Cal-Pac Conference. Serves as a regular presence at Sunday worship services to support the pastors and ministry leaders. Connects with visitors and members to help them engage more deeply in the life of the church. Serves on the Nominations Committee as an ex-officio member to help connect members with meaningful leadership opportunities Sunday Worship & Special Sundays Sunday worship and special events are the heartbeat of our life together as a church. Our Director of Community Life will support the worship life of the congregation and oversee special events. Recruits, trains, and builds relationships with ushers, sextons, liturgists, communion servers, and blood-pressure assistants for Sunday worship, providing meaningful ongoing engagement in these roles. Organizes and provides in-person support for special events such as Celebration Sunday, monthly Taco Night, and welcome lunches with the pastors, including catering and programming. Coordinates other special events at the request of the pastor. Community Partnerships Rolling Hills UMC is very integrated into the wider community, and there are always opportunities for greater connection in mission and ministry beyond our walls. Supports the Associate Pastor of Connections, Visitation & Missions in identifying and strengthening community partnerships (e.g., Toberman Center, Taking Time, Scouts). Works with the pastors in cultivating new "fresh expressions" and discipleship opportunities to reach new people (e.g., Yogachapel). Serves as a backup at the front desk / Coordinator of Connections & Operations role when needed.

Requirements:

Ability to deal with people with sensitivity and compassion, and to maintain pastoral confidentiality and boundaries. Excellent interpersonal skills — warmth, responsiveness, and flexibility. Motivated self-starter who can complete projects successfully and on time, while also working collaboratively with a large office staff. Excellent written, oral, and graphic communication skills. Proficiency with WordPress, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Canva. Comfortable using AI tools to draft communications and reports, with sound judgment about accuracy and confidentiality (see
