Job Description

The Community Relations Department has an opening for a Communications Manager.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves the responsibility for performing communications, public relations and marketing work using many types of media. An employee in this class creates written and/or visual content for the public on a broad range of county programs, projects, activities and services. The work is responsible for maintaining and updating the Orange County website to ensure that all information is current, accurate and accessible. The work performs daily functions of updating the home page, editing, and posting as needed. Work may involve broad contact with the public, local government officials, civic organizations and the media which requires tact and diplomacy. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Community Relations Director with leeway to exercise independent judgment within the framework of applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures in the performance of duties, both in terms of planning and accomplishing work, and in making decisions regarding client needs and requests and conducting project assignments. Supervision is not the responsibility of this class but may serve as a team lead in communication activities. Position does related work as required. This position will serve as a liaison with the county's Human Services departments (including Social Services, Health, and Housing). A background check is required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, graphic design or a related field AND 3 (three) years of professional communications experience preferably in the public sector. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined above. A higher degree does not substitute for work experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. All offers of employment are conditional upon successful clearance of a background check. Employment cannot commence until the employee has been cleared.
