Job Description

Communications Officer Responsibilities Communications Officers are expected to:
  • Be available for shift work.
  • Ensure complete and consistent data entry.
  • Perform routine equipment upkeep and basic troubleshooting.
  • Update and maintain relevant contact information.
  • Demonstrate fluency in the use of all computer systems, WCJIS and NCIC policies and procedures.
  • Be available to cover shifts when other personnel are on leave.
  • Possess the ability to clearly hear, understand, and relay accurate information.
  • Fulfill any other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police. Required Skills The following skills are essential for this role:
  • Strong, clear, and efficient verbal communication skills.
  • A basic understanding of technology and computer data entry and typing skills.
  • A solid knowledge of the county and town's geography, along with proficient map-reading abilities.
  • A thorough understanding of police terminology, policies, regulations, and procedures. Key Duties The primary responsibilities of a Communications Officer include:
  • Receiving and processing both emergency and non-emergency calls; monitoring phone and radio traffic; and accurately entering information into the computer systems.
  • Communicating effectively with the public, peers, and supervisors; interpreting, explaining, and responding to operational and procedural inquiries; and completing necessary notifications to the appropriate agency or individuals, such as the public information officer or command staff.
  • Operating and monitoring sophisticated communication systems, including Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Radio Systems, the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), and the Wyoming Criminal Justice Information Network (WCJIN); performing initial troubleshooting and reporting any significant failures to the designated personnel.
  • Working flexible schedules as needed to meet performance objectives and ensure continuous 24-hour coverage.
  • Appearing in court when subpoenaed.
  • Staying up-to-date on job-specific procedures by participating in training courses to apply appropriate methodologies.
  • Carrying out various miscellaneous job-related tasks as directed.
  • Maintaining the Communications Center to ensure a productive, healthy, and clean working environment.
  • Focusing primarily on officer safety, public relations, accurate data entry, and fostering positive working relationships with other members of the Department and external law enforcement agencies. Conditions of Employment To be eligible for this position, candidates must:
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Successfully complete all internal Communication Officer related security training programs.
  • Pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Successfully obtain and maintain Wyoming Public Safety Telecommunicator certifications.
