Public Safety Radio Dispatcher Trainee Education and Experience :
Successful completion of high school and one year of experience receiving, processing and/or dispatching calls in a radio dispatch or call center OR successful completion of high school and three (3) years of experience working in public contact employment defined as customer service, a call center, or a closely related field where substantial face-to-face or over-the-phone contact was made with the public. Required Licensing (such as driver's license, certifications, etc.) None. Public Safety Communications Specialist Education and Experience Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate) AND one (1) year of experience working in public contact employment defined as customer service, a call center, or a closely related field where substantial face-to-face or over-the-phone contact was made with the public. Acceptable Substitution Completion of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training Public Safety Dispatchers' Basic Course may be substituted for the one (1) year of required experience. Required Licensing (such as driver's license, certifications, etc.) Must possess and maintain the Emergency Medical Dispatch and Emergency Fire Dispatch certification through the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch within three (3) months of employment. Selection Process:
The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's training and experience based on the application and responses to all the job specific questions. You must answer all questions to be considered or your application may be deemed incomplete and withheld from further consideration. Only those candidates whose backgrounds best match the position will be invited to proceed in the selection process. Applicants deemed most competitive after oral interviews will be required to pass a Fire background investigation, which includes polygraph and psychological screening. INFORMATION SESSION
The Information Session provides applicants with more details regarding the day-to-day duties of the position(s) and an overall understanding of the hiring and training process. Candidates will also have an opportunity to ask questions of current dispatch personnel.PERSONAL HISTORY QUESTIONNAIRE
(PHQ): The most qualified applicants for Public Safety Radio Dispatcher Trainee and Public Safety Communications Specialist will be invited to complete an online pass/fail PHQ screening. The PHQ screening is designed to identify applicants who meet the Fire Department's hiring standards. The PHQ screening will consist of approximately 180 questions. The questionnaire will ask applicants to self-report behavior that has been determined to relate directly to job suitability. Applicants should be prepared to provide detailed information of their personal history in the following nine categories: education, employment, driving history, military experience, substance use, financial history, legal history, fire, public safety and/or emergency medical experience, and other general information.COMPUTER PRACTICAL EXAM
(CritiCall): Candidates will be invited to take a computerized practical exam. During this exam, applicants are tested in several areas including data entry, multi-tasking, call summary, reading comprehension, map reading and more.
